Implanted Retinal Chip Allows Blind People To See

A disease called retinitis pigmentosa causes deterioration of the retina. This chip augments a damaged retina, converting light information into the appropriate signals for the brain. Currently it's 38x40 pixel resolution and, I believe, is only grayscale... but people who went blind getting to see again! Amazing.

"One of the patients surprised researchers by identifying and locating objects on a table; he was also able to walk around a room unaided, approach specific people, tell the time from a clock face, and describe seven different shades of gray in front of him."

Freakin' awesome.

I wonder how much a company like Nikon or Kodak (or whatever company makes high resolution CCDs) could help this kind of technology. Higher resolution receptors with large color gamut.

Or better. No reason you couldn't put radio, infrared, and/or ultraviolet in there.

Great! I remember a few years ago, they succeeded to restore vision through a "patch" on the tongue! The tongue has a lot of receptors and the brain reprogrammed itself to "see" using it! Here's a link: Tongue-Vision Allows The Blind To Lap-Up The Sights Damn, I just learned that this was invented at the university I'm attenting in Montréal

My wife has RP. Over the years, she has slowly lost the ability to see our 11 year old daughter's face. She has never seen our newborn daughter's face. She still works, quite successfully, in IT. I'm always hopeful that technology will give her hope, and hopefully someday, restored vision.

Fantastic! It will be fun to watch this technology grow. The potential good is... well, it's just as cool as it gets.

My monitor seems passé.
