Apple drops BTO Mac mini prices
January 25 - 12:58 EST__ Apple has quietly cut prices on build-to-order (BTO) components for its new Mac mini. The company is now offering the Bluetooth and AirPort Extreme wireless option for US$99 (was $129), the 1GB DDR333 SDRAM upgrade for $325 (was $475), and the 80GB ultra ATA hard drive upgrade for $50 (was $80). Apple is also now listing an 8x SuperDrive option instead of the previous 4x model for the same $100 cost. _[ Email this story ]

Man.. So early adopters get stuck with a 4x superdrive? I hope the difference is just firmware rather than actual hardware, so that we can get our drives upgraded too.
Either that, or they've just been sending out 8x drives from the start.. Any info? I'm still waiting on my mini.

My mini is here already, I just have to wait 2 weeks for my birthday Since it's a gift, I'm not so concerned about the BTO cost changes, but twice the speed dvd-r would be nice..
Oh well, I guess time will tell.

It's good to see Apple cutting the prices on the BTO stuff.
Too bad they don't put 512MB by default in the mini, though. This is one area Apple needs to swallow the extra manufacturing cost - especially with the mini.

Or just bump the price by $20... I know the $499 and $599 are the magic 99's, but still.

>$499
I'd say eat into the 6 bill in cash for 6 months until component costs drop to the amount that you could charge 499 and still do 512.
the $499 number is just to magical to change.
off topic: why the Frack does these stupid emoticons cause my G5 and safari to turn on the fans??
it's friggin animated gifs people???!

Wow, dropped the BTO Education prices too! AirPort Extreme + Bluetooth module only $89 extra for us. Also, the Optical Drive selection CLEARLY states 8x and it also shows "+,- RW". NICE!

And upgrade from 4x to 8x is not a price break.
That's just the etxra money you pay as an early adoptor. It's not nice, but there always will be upgrades to the hardware for less money...

Will this price drop effect those of us that have not received their BTO mini yet? Mine won't arrive until Feb. 17th.

Apple is doing a good job, they are definitely going after some sweet spots. I wish I had $499 for a mini!

I'd say. I was looking at the 129 price before for both the BT and the Airport Extreme card and was thinking twice about getting both. now that the set is 99 dollars there is no second thought. I'm getting that and the superdrive.

so, wait... let me get this straight. Everyone who purchases a mini today (the 25th) is not an early adopter? Just the people who purchased them from the 22nd to the 24th?
What kind of logic is this???
Anyway... i think what we are seeing is that Apple has been busy making mini's for the past month or so, and component prices have been dropping on them. Considering that some people got 5400 RPM drives and some people got 4200 RPM drives, some got Hynix memory, others got Samsung (like myself), it's the only thing that makes sense. I'm also guessing that Apple has multiple sources of components to insure a healthy supply of mac minis.
But, it is a bit frustrating since especially in the case of 4x vs 8x or 4200 vs 5400, there is a noticeable difference in the speed of the parts used.
BTW -- what is up with the CD burning speed of the mini? I burned a 65 minute audio CD using iTunes, and although it said 2:20 to burn, it was more like 10 minutes. Is this a mini issue, a iTunes issue, a single processor G4 issue (I have a dual 1.8 G5 at work), or what?

The 8X may be a misprint. The official specs still list 4x drives. It would make sense, since the iMac G5 and PowerBooks also show the same speed and would presumably use the same drive. Or perhaps the drives will be upgraded across the board at some point.
I wonder when Apple will start shipping dual-layer burners.

Appears that it was a misprint. The website now shows 4X Superdrives as of 9:00am 1/26/05.

Apple to honor price protection on BTO Mac mini
January 26 - 13:04 EST__ Following yesterday's price drops on certain build-to-order (BTO) Mac mini components, Apple said it will refund the difference to affected purchasers, according to MacMinute readers. "I spoke with Apple Customer Service this afternoon and they will honor price protection for those that purchased the mini within the last 14 days. You must call," a MacMinute reader writes. As reported yesterday, Apple quietly cut prices on the BTO components for its new Mac mini, offering the Bluetooth and AirPort Extreme wireless option for US$99 (was $129), the 1GB DDR333 SDRAM upgrade for $325 (was $475), and the 80GB ultra ATA hard drive upgrade for $50 (was $80)._Continued... _[ Email this story ]
