I am new to macs. Have been using pc for years, but not apple since my first c3 a while ago. So be gentle with me, I'm a newby.

I am running a g3 with os 8.6. When I try to run quicktime I get a "need quicktime 5.0" message. This even when trying to run quicktime 5.0. ! Aaaargh!

You're post was very vague, but I think that this might help.

Go to Apple.com and click on the quicktime tab and follow the instructions on the site to reinstall 5.0. Your quicktime files may be divided between 5.0 and 4.x or something.

Out of curiosity, how do I get mpeg 2 working on QT 5.0.2? (or where do I go to get the Sorenson Video codecs?)

OK, I tried this (actually tried several times thinking I had lost something in the translation) No luck. Used sherlock to search for any quicktime 4.x parts couldn't find any. If I start quicktime and try to run one of the 'tv' deals ie. techtv, I get the need quicktime 5.0 with still pictures enabled message. As far as I can tell, that is all true now. Is this an OS 8.6 problem?

chaplaingreg, maybe your QuickTime preferences need to be deleted? There are two in my System Folder/Preferences folder.

Jim, there is no MPEG-2 codec for QuickTime 5. MPEG-1, -2 and -4 were promised for QT5, but Apple has not provided them yet.

You Should be able to run the QuickTime Updater program in your QuickTime folder to get the Sorenson codec.

When installing QT 50, did you install the minimum or recommended install? I know that sometimes using the recommended helps even if you don't have quicktime pro. Therefore, try recommended if you used minimum (there must be a better way of describing this. I end up repeating myself so much ).
