Wow it has ben a long time since I have posted here.
I need everyone's advice on this. I am able to get some very good prices on some G4's through the companies that my work buys G4's from. One can get dual 533's and the other cannot. I have two quotes from them and I need everyone's advice what to do. Here goes:
Place #1:
Single 667 for $2629 no tax.
Place #2
Dual 533 for $2536 including tax (2499 at the Apple Store without tax)
Jump at the 667 you say? Well I would, but I am thinking long term here. When OS X gets up and going the dual 533's will be very very nice. It will be nice to have one processor handling the OS while the other is handling the App I am working on (no, the app doesn't need to be coded specifically for this, the OS will automatically do this), but when an app is coded for MP it will be an even larger improvement.
On the other hand we have the G4'+ with the enhanced AltiVec and on chip cache which is very appealing, along with the increased speed (but deeper pipeline)
Advice? Any chip geeks out there with some thoughts to throw in here?
Any AI folk out there that just wants to drop in an say Hi?

The OS doesn't take up that much CPU time. Maybe 5% worst case. OS X will do a good job with SMP but fact is most if not all apps will not be threaded or MP aware.
I always say that unless you have an application that you know you want to run on dual CPUs then go for the faster single.

Hey Bookrat!
Thanks Scott. Anyone else have any insight?
Considering what you said Scott, do you think Apple will do a quiet upgrade to dual 667 & 733's or wait until MWNY to make a big deal out of it?

You may want to look at this thread, very related.
Good lord it's strange to see all us AI riff-raff wandering about here. As if our normal drinking stablishment was closed or something.

Unless you can't wait, I suggest the 533mhz dual would be the best solution especially with Mac OS X.

Definately go dual since you're thinking about the future and Mac OS X.

Bodhi
The question I would be asking is,"Which would be easier to upgrade to faster cpu's?"
Will dual processor 733MHz upgrades be available for the dual 533MHz?
Will dual processor 733MHz upgrades be available for the single 733MHz?
Both have the new bus speed, so if you plan on keeping the machine for very long and dual processors are important this may be important.

Just waiting to be included in one of Apple's target markets.
