Only a day after analyst Charlie Wolf noted that Apple's North American education-segment sales had hit an all-time quarterly record, Apple has reportedly declined to re-authorize contracts permitting Apple Authorized Campus Stores across Canada, effectively ending the program -- allegedly due to declining on-campus sales. The current contracts are scheduled to end with the current school year, beginning in June.

The move affects stores at universities and community colleges across the country, but may simply be the result of students buying Macs, iPads, and accessories from online dealers (including Apple itself) and major retail chains rather than on-campus stores, reports AppleInsider. Existing stores are said to have until May 31 to sell existing Apple hardware. The stores may be able to continue, but would only be able to sell accessories and peripherals (and other brands of computer as desired) as of June.

The Canadian campus store closings have sparked discounts and sales on remaining Apple hardware -- and the move by Apple could signal a future re-think of campus stores in the US. While some of the larger universities and colleges continue to generate substantive revenue for the company, stores at smaller colleges may see the Canadian de-authorization as writing on the proverbial wall. Educational discounts offered by the Apple online store and authorized dealers in Canada will be unaffected by the change.

The only way Apple could feasibly screw over a retailer/distributor is if the retailers/distributors had some kind of constitutional right to sell Apple gear and Apple did something afoul to restrict this right.

Fortunately, they don't have this right. Only the opportunity.

It's impossible to get "screwed over" playing an optional game that you choose to play where the rules are clear and presented to you before you opt into the game.

These retailers are no more "screwed over" than a basketball player is being benched for missing too many shots.

Are the stores not responsible for unsold stock? Are they getting paid (like a benched basketball player) to sell Apple products?
