I found the disk image for the OW 5.5 private beta about a week ago, but the disk image is password protected. Oh, well. It'll be here soon enough.

- Better RSS. Something along the lines of Safari, although if they figured out a way to do a better "portal" type RSS feed look, that would be great (see http://www.netvibes.com).
- More bookmark features. Check for duplicates etc.
- More integration of features found in FireFox Extensions (auto-update, html code, more status reports).

Again, OmniWeb kicked ass last year, but people are catching up in all of their features.

Omni group. If you are reading this: Don't you change how RSS works. I hated, hated, hated Safari RSS and in fact, I removed entire RSS functionality with debug menu.

Omni "invented" the way how RSS should work in browser, in its most simple and innovative form.

next time you people blame browser as the prime suspect and cpu hog, memory killer... ANY BROWSER, just take a quick look to pages open and if they have Macromedia/Adobe flash content in them.

I did the ultimate "end user" fault of blaming a browser for using too much CPU while there is Macromedia Flash poor thing does run in its own account (e.g. thread) and never gets blamed.

I am licensed omniweb user waiting for private beta or a public beta and I better repeat: The plugins in any browser (camino, omni, safari), If they manage to hog CPU on Earth's best 2d accelerated system (OS X) they show as "browser" since they are running in browser.

Simply, if there is a bug in Macromedia flash making it use 60% of CPU- it will show as "poor browser" using 60% CPU and nobody can do anything about it except plugin developer. Still, user will give "5 stars" to flash on VT (just because it is installed fine) and "1 star, stay away!!" comment to whatever browser he/she uses. Activity Monitor shows Browser as guilty

So I guess the font smoothing is not as nice in 5.5? Well, as long as the speed improves. Can't wait to try it out.

Technically, not as nice, but I doubt the difference will be noticeable.

I'm guessing that MacNN forums as a tech/user support arena is not one of OmniGroup's priorities any more and/or they are just really busy coding and supporting end users via the proper channels.

FWIW, the difference in font rendering will presumably be the same as between OmniWeb 5.1.3 and Safari 2.x. You can see for yourselves right now what difference it will make.

OK, I didn't want to post this beforehand but it is now officially free to know... OmniGroup have set up their own forums for discussing Omni products. OmniWeb 5.5 sneakypeek testers have also been given permission by Ken Case to talk about them too, so pop over there and ask away. The "leaked" sneakypeek release notes give most of it away already, so there probably isn't a huge amount to ask

I can tell you now - there are still many features missing, some modified old ones, and some much improved ones... yes it is much faster, yes it is much more compatible and, yes, the font rendering difference is barely noticeable once you have been using it for a while

Note the unified toolbar, site-specific preferences for using your own style sheets to view websites, and the WebKit Web Inspector feature (currently not a default in OmniWeb).
Nice!

If you guys think the lack of news on the progress of OmniWeb leads you to unease, you really should go over to the Proteus X forums where panic-struck users are right now throwing themselves over the side of cliffs in sheer desperation.

It's not a pretty sight.

There should be a mechanism to eliminate the non Omni product owners from that forums and should be implied right when it begins.

Poor customer support will have to deal with "who pays for a browser" posts

Well, I will keep using "send feedback" in Omniweb. I even asked about Mount St. Helens and if it can be trouble for omni group as its based in Seattle. They say it is very away. (ducks)

The forum is intended for discussion amongst users and non-users alike, not for user support. Send Feedback is still OmniGroup's preferred and recommend mechanism of getting user support.

I know the main channel is feedback from application.

Using commercial browsers since 1999 (Started with Opera on win32), I am just a bit tired of those "why pay for browser" geniuses and trolls. Thats all

When Justin Wood left Proteus to Defaultware, I had a feeling everything was over for Proteus.

And not surprisingly, Proteus got maybe 1 update since...Justin left for Apple, what, a year and a half ago?

Yeah, I feared that this would happen as well. It's a shame because I really like that little app and I am quite sad to see it stagnate and slowly wither away into irrelevance.

5.5 sneaky peak is now available here Been using it for the last hour and can say that it's faster than Safari now. Nothing much new otherwise, but I didn't really need that. Just brilliant.

to get rid of the stripes in the menubar, type this in the terminal:

defaults write com.omnigroup.OmniWeb5 HideConstructionWarning -bool true

Be sure to quit OW first. Btw, this only works as of SP7

After playing with 5.5 yesterday and today, I really have to say that the wait has been worth it. I've always loved the featureset of OW, and felt that the only thing lacking was the speed of the Big Two (Safari and Firefox). Now, dare I say it, OW feels faster on my MacBook Pro than either of the others.

This is a fantastic update. All the OW goodness we've come to love, with some really, really impressive speed gains. Thanks, OmniDudes - this is great.

OW was the first OS X program I ever really came to like, way back in the OS X Public Beta days. I've always had a soft spot for it.

For the fun of it, I ran the following benchmark with OW sp7:

http://www.24fun.com/downloadcenter/...s/benchjs.html

My results were 5,69 seconds on a double processor 2,3Ghz. Just faster than Camino on the same machine.

Well done, Omnigroup.

Did the test on my Macbook 2GHz:

Omniweb 5.5 SP7 - 5.13 secs.
Safari - 8.35 secs.

Not bad, Omni

For those having problems, the password is posted as a sticky on their forum under the title: "Sneaky Peek Downloads and Release Notes." I don't know why it's so hidden and I'm afraid to post it here, but go register and look under the Sneaky Peek Downloads and Release Notes.

Why the big secret? If people want to use the public sneakypeek they need the dmg password to load the disk image.

The dmg password is "bring your own support" (no quotation marks).

Check out the omniforums. They are very nice.
i look in your general direction

OW 5.5 shows amazing promise. Switched back to OW when SP5 was released and been using it ever since. This thing is FAST, especially on my Macbook! Coupled with all the usual niceties the OW interface offers, OW is once again leading the pack I think.

I hope the Omni Group sends their modifications to the Safari team. It'd be nice if they collaborated so that JavaScript and HTML rendering was as fast in both browser.

I don't know how Omni managed to increase JS performanceup so much but if it's not the result of trickery or hacks, it'd be interesting to see the Safari team learn from Omni.

I'm really liking OW SP7. Once they can manage to fix the 'known issue' I'm about to list, it'll be my full-time browser.
