I need to replace a dead IDE drive in a firewire enclosure.
Which way should I go?
Western Digital or a HItachi Travelstar?
They both have a 3 year warranty and are about the same price on Newegg.

With Seagate you can get a 5-year warranty instead of a 3-year...

For every brand of hard drive, you'll find some people who love it and others who have had problems with it.
That said, I also like Seagate.

Third on Seagate.
I've had a number of WD drives go south on me relatively fast but all my Seagates are still kicking.

Then Seagate it is.
Now where apart from Newegg is a reliable and competitivly priced place to consider buying from?

Actuall, Newegg is very good, and they ship superfast.
Why are you looking for an alternative?

As long as there aren't any Mac incompatibility issues with the models I'm considering, I don't really care which brand of drive I'm buying.

Because i want to know of other options and because i asked?
Anyway, I found ZipZoomFly Directron and TigerDirect.com to have prices inline with newegg if not better for HDDs

Another vote for Seagate here.
Recently got a new Seagate and it runs find not compatibility problems (if you are going Barracuda then get at least the 10 series as i think a few 9 series had a few problems with macs)

Nik
So something labeled Barracuda 7200.9 would have issues?
Because the enclosure in question can't take anything larger than a PATA 120-160gb drive

I think there was a little issue with them, something about the firmware on the drive made it use this feature that was not compatble with Macs (I cannot remember exactly but i might only be an issue with PowerMac G5s). But if you are buying new i don't think there are even any 7200.9 kicking about anymore. I have a 7200.10 and that works fine.

G5's used Serial ATA
This has all been about PATA drives

I have had several Seagates, WD's and Maxtor's in everything from a B&W G3 to my current QS, which curently has 2 (SATA) Raptors, 1 IBM, and 1 Maxtor in it. My peecee has 2 Seagates + 1 SATA Hitachi in it. ALL of these drives have ran flawlessly for the past 2-4 yrs, and never notta problemo
So, go for the best deal you can find on any of these and you will be happy

Personally I find it hilarious that you have the hots for my gramma. Especially seeins how she is 3x your age, and makes your Brittney-Spears-wannabe 30-something wife look like a rag doll who went thru WWIII with a burning stick of dynamite up her a** :)
