As is so often the case CTP speaks with such "self-assurance" on a topic that he clearly knows nothing about. Unless of course this is just a figment of our imagination.

I was very amused that the company that touts its single piece aluminum bodies for the Airs was touting its 5,000 (or whatever) part per link watch bands.

but actually buying one with the cheaper rubber strap is another thing, they simply won't have the one with the matching gold accents available. However, they will have the link, loop, and leather options ready to go.

Feel free, but when it comes to Watches, Apple won't be an electronics seller, it'll be like buying jewelry (which for most is about as annoying as buying a car).

Only in the mind of CTP are those two statements even remotely equivalent. I'll just leave it at that ...

I understand his point perfectly. He's saying that the rubber-watchband Edition will be in the catalogue, but won't actually be available, thus necessitating the up-sell.
I don't think Apple operates that way, but we'll see.

I would highly doubt it. Such a scenario would be classic "bait-and-switch" and quite illegal. Not to mention extremely poor customer service. Some guy who is looking to spend $10K now all of sudden is forced to spend $15K or $17K just to get a leather band instead of synthetic rubber? I can't even imagine Apple trying to piss off a customer with that kind of disposable income with such shenanigans.

Apple is shifting their business into becoming a luxury brand, but as with the iPhone, they will usurp the existing market not by working like the incumbents, but by being Apple.
They may be stubborn or recalcitrant, but they've never outright lied. Offering a model with full intent to never actually make it available is not a tactic that fits in at all with what Apple does, what they represent, and why people buy their stuff.

I'm disappointed, not angry. It's sad when adults resort to grade school tactics in an attempt to alienate those you disagree with.

Who said they're outright lying? I didn't. Of course all Watch models will be available, at least for a limited time, but the Edition Watch is going to be a "curated experience", like buying any "high image" product, and some strap combinations with it will be strongly discouraged and likely only available for purchase after the initial sale. That's the way high-end timepieces are presented and sold in a retail environment (which will be the only way you can buy the Edition).

Apple Sales experts are routinely coached in up-selling.
Nevertheless, I'm sure we'll see the white-banded gold Apple Watch in the wild. It looks rather snazzy, I think.

You may, I can put any cheap 22mm strap on my Da Vinci chrono, but it'll be someone who bought the strap later, as an accessory.

It's sadder when people who have watched for over 25 years, went to Cupertino, knows some of the dev staff, current boss was an ex-Apple employee, etc., etc. get laughed at by someone who's just cynical. And wrong.

See how that works? Many of us here at MacNN have connections with Apple, some have several. That doesn't make you a special snowflake, and they (Apple) aren't divine, by any stretch of the imagination (in fact, I'd say they're more cold-blooded than most other businesses). If you love them, that's fine, but it's also okay for people to be cynical about them and their businesses practices, they've done quite a number of things over the years to be deserve that. Just accept it.

This isn't remotely constructive. Can we get back to talking about how the watch itself will fail?
I know how poor Apple's BlueTooth power management is due to SYNC in my car. Since it's available, I leave my BlueTooth on while in the car. Just streaming podcasts or music to my car drains the battery about 8% from my house to the office. Having data transmitted from the phone to the watch (and vice versa) all day long will understandably drain the battery on the watch faster than the "18 hours" Apple is claiming.
However, it's also going to drain people's iPhones much, much faster. I'm surprised how little this is being mentioned.
The Verge is saying that the Apple Watch's killer feature is that it will make people use their iPhones less, but that doesn't mean they'll have an 80% charge on their iPhone at the end of the day. I foresee a lot of people using the smithereens out of their watch, then getting aggravated when their iPhone is nearly fully depleted ahead of their anticipated schedule.
Or Apple has figured all of this out, and I'll be proven to be a shmuck next month.

I'm still not interested in the product(or the category for that matter).
Was hoping for a major announcement of a killer app or a competitive advantage feature of the Apple Watch last week, but that didnt happen.

Also: Apple is damn confident that this watch will actually stand the test of time (boom). A 10 grand piece of electronics should last a bit longer than a year or two.
