So, $50 gets you the antiglare... That is enough reason to get the new 17" IMHO.

I don't think this is true. Based only my own research.
When I purchased a black macbook I thought I had a defective one and replaced it twice due to seemingly bad panels. They put panels from different manufacturers in the same laptops. None were actually defective I discovered just a wide variation in how they handled the fact that they were only 6 bit.
I had 3 black macbooks with 3 different panels with noticeably different results. And my wife had still another in her white macbook. During this time I also noticed the Macbook airs had different panels too, and there was overlap between MB and MBA panels.

the current macbook air DEFINITELY has a better screen than the current (or previous-gen) macbooks (sadly proclaimed by a current-macbook owner)...

Yeah, I think that this will come in the future - they can't rule out the 15" for the "professionals".
Would have been nice if they included it in this MacWorld. Would have made this thread real.

It really does feel as if they are positioning the 15" as more of a consumer-oriented machine.

that's a riot, considering all the arguments, I MEAN, discussion here about how the 15" is the pro machine (and the macbook, as a lowly 'consumer' machine, doesn't deserve firewire or a decent screen). up until now, the 15" mbp was supposed to be the ultimate pro mac notebook...
seems to me the 17" is simply the 'super-pro' mac... (and costs enough; it's not for everyone).
