I've had it with my web hosting service. The billing system is for the birds. The reliability is poor, and the communication is for the birds.

I'm so done with them, and looking for recommendations in the $5-$7 / mo. range

(The site is relatively small, so not needing a host for a big business.)

I use Dreamhost. It's a little more than that range, but I haven't had any major issues with them.

Has Dreamhost been reliable overall? I heard some negative things about it in the past.

Dreamhost has never given me any problems.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.

I've been using Dotster for years, absolutely reliable and you get a lot for 5.95 a month. Dotster.com

One and One has been good to me. I get nice rates, no fuss with billing, and I've never seen any downtime (though I don't watch that like a hawk, nor use my sites for commerce).

I host my own website using dynamic DNS software to update the DNS if/when my IP changes.

The negative stuff you heard probably had something to do with either performance or security. When you sell at such a high volume low cost like DH does there are going to be some tradeoffs such as these. The last time I accessed a Dreamhost shell the performance was noticeably poor on that node for me.

Still, it is probably the best of the cheap for sites that don't demand optimal performance.

I use asmallorange.com. I'm on the $25/year plan. No complaints. Can't remember the last time the site was down, if ever.

Another thing I should point out about Dotster, they have real people you can call if you have problems. No BS trying to talk to a live person about anything.

I use Fatcow, great ISP, they often have specials, eg $69/year.

Just FYI, Fatcow is not an ISP.

Hostgator

Had my site running on there for the past 4 years, had a few problems back in like 2008 but since then has been bulletproof and as normally fast as one should expect.

I saw they offer email as well. Do you use that and how has it worked out?

It's worked out fine. Unlimited accounts, too. POP or IMAP. Works perfectly with Mail.app.
They also provide a full array of cPanel tools.

Cool. This is a very timely thread. A family member needs some ultra-basic help, so I'm doing something simple in iWeb and need just the basics to ftp upload it with integrated email and domain registration.
