That's the moisture in the air "during" a sonic boom. A conically shaped high pressure surface is formed by objects traveling faster than the speed of sound in a medium, e.g., a jet flying through the air. The cone is caused by the jet traveling faster than the sound waves that are produced by it can travel.

If the humidity level is high enough, the humidity in the air may condense in that trough of low pressure and form a cloud, only to be reabsorbed by the air when pressure returns to normal. These clouds tend to form on the noses and leading egdes or tips of wings, canards, etc.

Can you hear the boom while traveling faster than sound?

By the way, the guy did it with a prosumer camera and a cheap zoom lens. The camera (Canon EOS 10D) does 3 fps though. (I just ordered the 5 fps Canon 20D.)

No. You're faster than the boom.

On the ground, though, it will shatter windows.

I'm coming from the EOS Rebel SII (film) and the Powershot G2 (digital).

The EOS 20D is going to be a MAJOR upgrade. I'm also getting the 17-85 IS and the 70-200 f/4L.

that will be a nice upgrade, yes. your lens choices cover the range well. i prefer primes myself and sport these bad boys: sigma 12-24 f/4.5-5.6 (ok, this one isn't fast or a prime), canon 28/1.8, 50/1.4, 135/2, sigma 180/3.5 macro. mmm primes

it varies with altitude, air pressure, and (I believe) humidity and temperature, but it's closer to 650mph, IIRC.

However, I do believe demograph's question may have been sarcastic (the rolleyes might have ticked you off), since ambush was late to the party, obviously didn't read the thread, and basically gave a crude, two-word summary of what one of the first replies had already explained at length.

Indeed

The first time I watched it, I was wondering why all those people's ear drums hadn't exploded. If you look, you can see the guy on the bottom left clap his hands over his ears. I assume everyone else was wearing some hardcore ear plugs.

Someone post the video of the F-14 doing a flyby of a carrier, and breaking the sound barrier as it passes... because I can't be bothered finding it.

This isn't exactly the right thread to ask that.

Both the photo and the video are amazing. I've only seen diagrams of the effect before; never knew it could be rendered so visible by the right atmospheric conditions.

What surprised me is that it was just a guy standing on his balcony with a prosumer camera and a cheap lens, the crappy EF 75-300 USM non-IS. (This lens goes for US$169.)

I actually own an older model of this lens and I am definitely not a fan of it. But like the saying goes, it's not the camera [or lens], but the photographer.

BTW, I see he's finally watermarked the pic. Good decision.

True, but that lens and camera combo is not a great autofocuser. I suppose he could have manually focused it though, but again, it's a sign of a good photographer (or else an extremely lucky one).

im really surprised that they allow air show planes to go supersonic. i would think that the boom would disrupt things (set off car alarms, break windows...) you sure its from the airshow?

Apparently you don't have to go supersonic for this to happen.

And yes it's damn loud. (I live many km away and it sounds like it's in my backyard.)

Now for today's trivia. This isn't a sonic boom at all. It's Prandtl-Glauert condesation. It's the result of low altitude and high humidity. But it's *shape* is due to going faster than sound.

At the Wings Over Houston airshow a couple of years ago, an F15 did this trick straight down the runway. We were all lining the runway as usual for the airshow, and they announce a high speed pass. The F15 zooms along just about 100' off the deck, and the condensation cone appeared and disappeared about half a dozen times. It's like watching an effect being switched on and off, it happens so fast.

The aircraft wasn't supersonic, but was close. There were no booms, but the noise of an F15 on full afterburner about 100' from your ears is pretty loud.

No, I didn't capture it on film. Yes, I wish I had, would have been very cool, I'm sure a few people did, there were lots of handycams going at the time.

My girlfriend and I went to the CNE to see the airshow on Sunday, but it was cancelled that day. Ah well. At least we went on one of the helicopter rides which was really fun since I've always wanted to fly in a helicopter. Nice photo catch, Eug.
