Bad keystroke leads to 251 million stock buy

A Taiwan stock trader mistakenly bought $251 million worth of shares with a misstroke of her computer keyboard, meaning her company is looking at a paper loss of more than $12 million and she is looking for a new job.

You know, a simple "are you sure?" dialog box would have saved this person's job…

I think the term "ouch" pretty much describes this one.

You mean there is no: "Do over" key? Dang.

Fubon said that the trader was unfamiliar with new computer systems and will be fired.
well, who's fault is that?

most five-why analysis usually leads to a conclusion that the root issue is poor management decisions.

Hmm those would probably be in one of a few angry messages to a friend or two

I've accidentally deleted things and such... but that generally involves the trash and I don't think I've ever accidentally trashed anything that big.

Blame the computer... If I was making a multi million dollar exchange, I wouldn't do it alone... but perhaps she does it all the time?

If that company were smart, they'd say this: "Fire you? Why would I do that? I just spent $12 million dollars training you!"

(That's from a management class I took, where a boss said just that to someone who'd goofed up, though it was only to the tune of $10,000 IIRC.)

But it's true: unless the person is a blithering idiot, they won't make that mistake, or any like it, ever again.

That is a very sad story. Maybe if she had a Mac, it would have been a different story.

Priceless.
