I like useless, quirky did-you-know kinda stuff. For whatever reason I think useless facts and trivia are fun...especially when they relate to geography.

So here are a few in the geography realm...

Did you know that Alaska is the northernmost state in the US? Most likely. Did you know it was the westernmost state? Probably. But, did you know that Alaska is also the easternmost state? Probably not! It's chain of islands strech across the Prime Meridian (180) placing a few of those islands in the Eastern Hemisphere. And, for the record, Hawaii is the southernmost state. Check it out!

Here's another. Poteau, Oklahoma claims to have the Worlds Highest Hill. Cavanal Hill, with its peak 1,999 feet above the average surrounding terrain, is 1 foot short of the accepted height of a mountain, 2,000 feet. Yes, I know that there is no "official" difference between a hill and a mountain. Nevertheless, Poteau proudly claims it. Check it out! I've actually been there. It is really pretty.

Wow all your friends with your new knowledge!

Now its your turn to spill the beans on your obscure geographic facts...

Did you know that North Dakota is the only state with a state-run bank? The Bank of North Dakota is actually controlled by the state, and remains a relic of the old leftist state that North Dakota once was. Since World War II, however, North Dakota has consistently voted Republican while it has lost population, but evidence of our growing, radical state of the turn of the century still exist throughout.

Did you know that in a related story...Norman, OK claims to have the "World's Greatest University." Nevertheless, it's been shown over and over again that it's indeed Stillwater, OK that has this.

Interesting.

Did you know that gorickey, while funny, is at times somewhat misled?

Ok, I find bugs interesting, so here's one: Houseflies find sugar with their feet, which are 10 million times more sensitive than human tongues.

Did you know that in 1750 there were about 800 million people in the world? In 1850 there were a billion more, and by 1950, another billion. Then it took just 50 years to double to 6 billion.

Did you know that the all-time stolen base record, leadoff homerun record, and all-time runs scored record in professional baseball are all held by the same player? Ironically, they are also records that will never be broken...

Glad to see everyone got into it. Except gorickey. I'm not really glad about that.

Here's another...

Did you know that the Ouachita Mountain range in Southeastern Oklahoma and Western Arkansas is the only one in the United States that spans in an east-west direction? It also has more relief than the more well-known Ozarks which are to the north.

Did you know that condoms have been in use since the 15th century. Before latex they used various sheaths such as sheep skin.

Did you know the origin of 'Put a sock in it' which means shut up actually was derived from the time of old record players (before THX) that used a horn to transmit sound from the needle gliding across the record. Because there were no volume controls on the thing one would have to put a sock in the horn to turn the volume down.

Did you know no one really knows what the origin of the term 'Okay / O.K.' is. (there are many theories and suggestions but no knows for sure).

Did you know post it notes came from an accidental glue experiment and that the orinal inventor thought it was useless as he was trying to create a super glue.

Did you know that the United States, self-proclaimed "land of the free", has an incarceration rate greater than any other nation on earth with a whopping 715 inmates for every 100,000 U.S. residents at midyear in 2003?

Did you know that in 2003, 68 percent of prison and jail inmates were members of racial or ethnic minorities,? An estimated 12 percent of all black men in their 20s were in jails or prisons, as were 3.7 percent of Hispanic men, compared to 1.6 percent of white men in that age group?

Ways Australia could kill you:

_Deadliest ocotopus in the world - the blue ringed octopus (Hapalochlaena sp.)
_Deadliest spider in the world - the Sydney funnel web (Atrax robustus)
_Largest crocodile in the world - the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus)
_Our inland taipan, Oxyuranus microlepidotus, is the deadliest snake in the world (note: I did not say most dangerous. I'm also ignoring average injection volume).
_Even if the taipan doesn't get you, we have the other top 8 deadliest snakes anyway (open to argument. At the very, very least, 6/10).
The Box Jellyfish, Chironex fleckeri - not much to say about this one. Just don't get stung.

All I can think of off the top of my head, but I find it interesting personally

I'm sure others can add more.

If someone can be described as "pachydermatous," they are insensitive to criticism and insult, or are insensitive to others.

Lennon & McCartney couldn't read music and Paul still can't.

Bangladesh is the most densely populated non-island region in the world, with more than 1,970 humans per square mile.

You're just as likely to die by falling out of bed then you are to get struck by lightning; each is a 1 in 2,000,000 chance. You have a 1 in 3,000,000 chance of being killed by a snake.

Approximately 70 percent of the Earth is covered with water. Only 1 percent of the water is drinkable.

Scotch Guard was also a serendipitous discovery. The researcher accidentally spilled an intermediate in a longer synthesis and discovered that the place on her shoes that were splashed never got dirty.
