It seems I have been having more and more OSX crashes lately. I have a Powerbook G4 667MHz running OS 10.2.6. It seems to crash or freeze every day now. It seems most of my problem started with the 10.2.6 update.

most of the time when I pull up Finder or anyother program for that matter it will freeze. It seems to work for a while but then it locks up. it doesnt seem to be program specific...iTunes, iMovie, Finder, iPhoto, Safari....etc.

I dont know what is causing it or how to correct it. reading through the forums some pople have suggested DiskWarrior, Repairing Permissions and reinstalling. Being a recient "Switcher" I really dont understand most of this and what it does. I do have my orginal OS 10.2.1 disk but I want to avoid reloading everything but I will if I must....Hey I've gotten used to reloading my Windows machine every 6 months anyway!!! I was just hoping that by having a Mac I wouldnt have to do this!

Can someone explain to me how I can correct this?

booboo's suggestion is the best way to go. It looks like there may be an issue with some Window shares. Have you been mounting Window shares... forlders on a Win machine?

Yes, I have some Windows drive I have been mounting to do some file sharing.....what do you think about this would be causing the lock-ups?

This doesnt explain the last log entry involving the laptop just turning itself off. once this happens I can just boot it back up and it's fine. When this happened I was at work and I was not doing any file sharing our drive mounts. I did have the ethernet cable connected so I could have internet access through the proxy servers but that was is

The simplest way of doing this is:

a)Starting up from your Jaguar Install Disc
b)Reinstalling Jaguar using the "Archive and Install" method (saves all of your current preferences and other installations)
c) applying the OS X updates one-by-one until you get to the one you want.

If you download the updates to your HD first, you'll have them ready if you ever need to go through this process again.

Being a recent "switcher" from Windows my universal solution is to format and reinstall. (I've done so twice in 6 months.

OS X (All versions up to 10.2) have VERY poor samaba sharing.. (dont know about others such as AFP)

You will run into many problems if you try to connect to a SMB server but the ip does not exists. Eventually you will probably end up with a kernel panic. Also, if you have the drive mounted, but turn off the computer that you are connected to, you will also run into major problems (this sounds like your problem)

Update: Well I decided to reload 10.2.3....I tried to fix the permissions, that didn't work and finally I decided to go ahead and reload 10.2.3. It seems to be running alot better, I had to move some of the files from when it did a back up but that was no big deal.

I really gave SMB a work out, transfered about 13GB of data over 3 different shared drives and no crashes....seems to be much more stable than 10.2.6

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions!!!
