Owners of older MacBook Pro models can now upgrade their devices to faster and lower-power wireless connectivity with the new UCard product line from QuickerTek. The UCard swaps out Apple-provided Wi-Fi and Bluetooth components in older unibody Macs, with the new user-installable card providing the latest in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth options, with no drivers necessary.

QuickerTek's UCard adds 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 LE capabilities to unibody Macs built between 2008 and 2012. The MacBook Pro 13-inch, 15-inch, and 17-inch models are supported in both some Retina and all non-Retina options. Antenna ports for QuickerTek's cards are matched to the stock configuration of each Mac, which may require a bottom panel removal by the consumer before purchase for identification.

UCards are Wi-Fi compatible with 802.11a,b,g,n, and ac, as well as Bluetooth 4.0 LE. The cards are compatible with OS X 10.10 Yosemite or OS X 10.11 El Capitan. Regardless of Mac model, the Ucard sells for $150.

So, the million dollar question, does this make these older Macs handoff compatible? I would assume that the OS tests against a model identifier and not the actual bluetooth version, but it would be a nice plus for this card.

We're trying to get a review sample, but yes, QuickerTek says it does.

Works with no drivers, full handoff support, $30.
