As an aside, I wish women's jeans had reasonably sized pockets. She'll put her phone in her back pocket and I keep expecting it to squirt out like a watermelon seed.

OKay, Waragainstsleep, you stunningly expanded this post in a whole other dimension  And, I'd like to get back the the OP's question re cases for iPhone 4S.
cmeisenzahl, I've been looking at 2 models, the CaseCrown Glider Case and the OtterBox Comuter Case. OtterBox also has the Defender, which seems like a safe for the phone. Personally, I will keep the phone on me, in pockets, which is why wear cargo pants/shorts. I'd imagine a Defender would be angular and intrusive, more something for a briefcase, where the phone would encounter other hard objects, books, tools, iPads etc. In my pocket I prefer soft and easy to extract. Make sure, if you get one of the ones I am looking at, to get a screen protector. Just a light plastic cover that prevents scratches.

I have had the OtterBox Commuter on a 3G for a year now and I am very pleased with it, so I ordered one for the 4s. Previously I wore out cases about every month or two.
I agree the Defender looks like just too much case.
