Here is some info on the new intel chip that will be in the powerbook about a year from now (or less):

Intel spills beans on Yonah, the next notebook chip

http://news.com.com/Intel+spills+bea...9925&subj=news

For one thing, it will contain two cores, instead of the single core on current notebook chips. The two separate cores will also share a 2MB cache. Current dual-core desktop chips from Advanced Micro Devices and Intel come with similar sized caches, but each core accesses only 1MB of cache memory dedicated to it. Sharing the cache will significantly boost performance. (The chips communicate with the cache through a single bus embedded in the chip.)

"When I speak of dual cores, I am not talking about a 10 percent to 20 percent improvement in performance. I am speaking about something crazy," Eden said.
A single-core version of Yonah will also come out for budget notebooks.
cough. ibooks. cough.

The chip will be paired with a chipset, called Calistoga, and a Wi-Fi module, called Golan, that will receive and send 802.11a, b and g. Later versions will come with 802.11n, the so-called MIMO technology. Wimax will start to be added in notebooks as an option around 2007, a spokesman said.
Nice.

All your laptop chips are belong to us(apple geeks.)

Very simple. You go to the store and buy a brand new one. Couldn't be easier than that.

The only hard part will be coming up with the money.

Sounds very impressive. Here's hoping the intel based notebooks are here sooner rather than later. It'll be nice to have the word *power* mean something when it is referring to powerbooks.

Hmm, I was thinking about getting a PowerBook. Maybe I'll wait now.

2 dual 2.0 GHz G5s aught to be able to hold me another year anyway.

I worry that a lot of people are going to think this way... the short term does not look good for Apple hardware.

Yeah, but Apple had to plan for this. Expect some migration marketing to start here soon that says what you buy now will keep working even with Leopard, and also Apple does have over $6 billion in cash to ride this out if all else fails.

Get an ADC Student Developer Account and buy a 17" powerbook from the ADC Hardware Purchase Program. You won't regret it trust me.

You don't have to worry odds are your PowerBook will be supported for minimum the next five years, at least by Apple, and by the time it matters if there is extra time taken to compile an app for PPC, odds are if your book can run it, the time it'll take for an x86 Mac to compile it will be minimal. That said I wouldn't be surprised if Apple forces apps to be compiled for both PPC and x86.

Don't worry about buying one... the initial shock got me for a bit.. but odds are you'll have more trouble with a new x86 Mac than you will a PPC. The reason why Apple is going Intel is because the G4s aren't going to get much faster. Though right now they are pretty zippy.

This is interesting: Steve has always amazed the masses with his "one more thing" announcements, but Intel needs to amaze its masses and competitors as well. Who will get to make the big announcements from now on? As far as I know, DELL doesn't get to announce any new Intel technology, though they may get first dibs on it. Something else that's interesting! Will Apple get sloppy seconds now that they're competing on the same platform as DELL?

Lots of interesting shenanigans going on

Who will get Yonah first? Dell, Alienware, Apple? Will Apple still skimp on the GPU, or finally produce a competitve laptop? They could really sell PentiumBooks fast and widen the market for them if they include a copy of Windows XP or Longhorn. Users could use whichever OS they prefer and still use Apple hardware.

Maybe they didn't want the Windows user experience spoiled by crappy emulation. Intel Macs will be able to dual boot Mac OS or Windows. Windows will of course run natively on them. Why wouldn't MS want to sell more copies of Windows?

And how do you know this?

VPC is one thing. Giving Windows to Mac users is quite a different. Same way that XBox360 users won't get Apple's Tiger installed just cuz they both run on PPC.

You may be able to hack OSX onto an XBox but there's already VPC for that.

Besides, you sound like a Windows fan. But there's many of us who don't user Windows and don't care to. I've never owned a Windows PC. I have VPC in case I need it for my job but that's all.

It was one of the Apple execs who said that only Intel Macs will be locked down so that OS X will only run on them and not on other x86 PC, but though they wouldn't support it, they wouldn't lock out Windows from running on Intel Mac hardware.

I haven't used Windows since I switched to Mac in '99. I've been on OS X since 10.0.4. I love my PowerBook and all of Apple's hardware but big changes are afoot. Apple is becoming an Intel PC vendor that markets it's own OS, but if Macs running Windows helps to sell more Macs, I don't think Apple will complain much, and those users may give OS X a try if they know they can still run Windows on the same hardware.

I'm so thrilled I sold my 12" PB (1.33Ghz) last week on eBay for a great price.

I'm holding out for the Pentium PowerBook, and can't wait! I honestly hope these new books can dual boot WinXP & OS X, it would be a complete miracle, and totally awesome. I doubt it would happen, but it would be incredible.

But first they'd hafta solve the Mac OS X Formatted drives vs. NTFS drives, right?

suposedly yes. as the yonah chips will be at .65 micron and intel has stated this would result in much much less heat. teamed with a list of HDs etc. that intel is reccomending , you will also get 8hrs off a single battery... or so they are claiming.

Actually, no, it's Not The Same Computer.
What it is, is the same interface and "experience" that we have all come to know and love.
(And for those who prefer to replace "love" with "lust", please send photos to . . . )

Okay, so . . . The CPUs, GPUs, Chipsets, busses, & technologies underpinning Mac and Windows will now be the same ?

If so, will Apple now be relying *solely* on presentation (the Macintosh interface, user experience and packaging) to differeniate itself?
Can Apple supply a significantly more "efficient" OS that will provide a significantly "faster" platform?

What are they truly relying on now aside from presentation and a more efficient OS. people arent buying macs cause they are faster than Wintel machines. They arent buying them casue they are cheaper... We buy them cause the OS is simple, stable and efficient to use. All this is packaged in a machine that actually looks and feels good. I bet that 90% of the users could give a hoot as to what is actually inside. Heck I'd take it if it had 2 rats in there so long as I got the same functionality.
