Right when I took the computer out of the box I noticed that when you hold the laptop up, the battery seems to sag a little and you can push it up. You push it up and it will come down. It works and everything, but is this normal?

Thanks

Does not sound normal to me. Look the battery door there is screw type device toward the center of the computer that one turns to open the door or keep it locked.

I guess I'll take it in then. Another thing I noticed about the Powerbook that goes along with the feeling of the laptop not being 'solid' due to the battery sagging is the screen. When it is closed, you can move the sides of the screen like a 'see-saw'. The movement is ever so small but it still kind of nags at me..

I thought it was 'normal' for the battery not to be flush with the bottom of the PB/iBook case... my iBook of 2002 was already like that...

I took out my battery when installling my RAM and placed it back in, and it is in the locked position. So I'm pretty sure it's sitting in there right.

My friend's new powerbook is also like this, except he said it is just on the side closest to the locking dial while it happens to the whole battery on my PB.

I set up an appt time with the Genius bar and will be going in today. I'll get back to you all with what they say.

I hope they don't charge me for looking at it. It says at the bottom that fees apply for some services.

Well I'm back. He said that the battery is more loose than considered normal, and is ordering some new batteries so that I can come in again on Thursday and we can try to fit those in. However, he did try putting a battery they had there in and it was still about as loose as my battery. This might mean its the case that's causing the problem, but since it works and doesnt sag to the point of touching the desk, it won't qualify as needing repair.

While I suspect this is mostly a cosmetic issue that doesn't impact performance, I suggest putting a strip or two of electrical tape between the battery and the casing to reduce travel. If the machine works and the battery stays in place while in use and when picked up off the desk, does it really matter? Not to me anyway.

On a tangent, I think many Apple owners expect perfection from their consumer-grade machines, and don't take into account reasonable manufacturing variance.

Enjoy your new PowerBook!

I think it's just the fact that we fork over so much money for a computer, we expect it to feel solid. My dad's dell laptop doesnt have a sagging battery, and cost half as much.
