Problem using external viewsonic monitor with MB

	I've been using the viewsonic 2235 monitor with my macbook lid closed. Works fine. But, if I try to use it this way to view a DVD, the viewsonic screen says "no signal" Touching a key on the external keyboard apparently does nothing to take the computer out of sleep mode when the DVD is in the slot. Any suggestions on how to make this work? Thanks.
