Here is my problem and what I�ve done to try to rectify the problem. I am loosing the Chooser between startups.

I have:
1. Clean install of System 9.0 and updater to 9.0.4.

2. Zapped PRam using TechTool 1.2.1

3. Rebuilt the desktop.

4. Thrown away Finder Preferences, printer preferences, etc.

5. Installed system on new hard drive.

This problem began after installing 9.0.4, if nothing else I'll just go back to 9.0

What do you mean by "losing the chooser"?

Do you mean that it is disappearing from the Apple Menu?

You aren't using Multiple Users, are you?

No, it is not disappearing. I have to go back to the Chooser and reselect my printer. This occurs after every start and/or restart.

By the sound of it, I would try installing a new back-up battery. You can buy them from any apple dealer or reseller (and maybe from Radio Shack, etc).

If it is a clock/PRAM battery failure, then other symptoms will be occurring as well:
-the date & time will reset to 1956
-the network will default to the printer port (IF the Mac has a printer port, otherwise it should go to Ethernet built-in)
-memory settings may default
-monitor settings may default
-possibly other settings, too

However, I don't recall seeing these kinds of problems after a restart, only after the power has been off to the system. (Not that it couldn't happen.)

I had this problem with my Epson printer, until I (clean) reinstalled the Epson drivers. You might try dumping and reinstalling the HP drivers.

You also might verify that your AppleTalk and printer are not set to the same port. Appletalk sometimes defaults to the Printer Port.

try holding command option when you open the chooser, you should hear a alert sound; select your printer, and then close out finder, and restart. See if hat helps
