Im getting an iMac i7 in a few days. I have a 100 gift card
I was thinking of an apple USB DVD drive.
the review on the apple site are very mixed. some say the drive died after
3 - 4 cd's were placed in it. this would really be for occational use.
and use up a few bucks
any idea on what the warranty is on this drive from apple ?
had any luck with them or not ?
many thanks

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

many thanks. the apple one would be 'free' ie I have a 100 gift card ....
unless I can think of something else I need. Indeed stuff at the apple store is always
a bit more pricy then amazon et.al.
many thanks
any ideas on how to find out about the warranty ?
I could call .....

Its a year, but if you get it with a new machine, and you get Applecare on the same receipt, you get the benefit of the Applecare warranty.

I have an Apple USB drive for the past two years, used it to install software from DVDs, CDs, played audio and video discs. rip discs, burned CDs quite often during that time and it is still working well for me.

I would suggest you go without the CD at all. Or at least try going without it for a bit and see how it goes.
I have seen a few times with clients they bought the USB DVD drive from Apple and have used it maybe once or twice in total. Was a waste of money for them.
I just use the remote disk feature with an existing older computer over the network on the rare occasion I want to read a disk.
I have a USB CD drive (not the Apple one but an older USB2 generic model) but never use it.
I never need to use CD on the road so I never pack it, and when I am at home I can just fire up the remote CD feature and put the disk into the older desktop computer that is still in my office.
Used my gift card to purchase a new bag ($70). The old computer bag zipper is just about ruined and the straps are starting to fray so it was time for a new one.
Besides that I got the thunderbolt to ethernet, and 2 magsafe to magsafe 2 adapters for the older chargers I still have. Used up the credit and paid the few dollars difference.

I bought one when I upgraded to one of the driveless new iMacs last year. The external DVD drive looks good, works great and is nice to have in a pinch but I must admit that I hardly use it at all and could have easily lived with the workarounds suggested above and saved some $.
