Well I tried MT Newswatcher 3.2

I wont work!!!!

Problem #1: it displays all the parts of a post, very confusing
Problem #2: selecting them all and the extract binaries takes a long time, but there is simply no trace of any downloaded file????
Problem #3: the posted mp3 files all consist of multiple parts; Question: are that binaries our do I need another helper application?

I am afraid that the only way to help me is:

Try what I do: newsgroup: newsbin.telenet.be:119 group: alt.binaries.warez4kiddies.mp3
Try to download an album there??

Do the same thing on a Windows XP machine and use: Bompanews (you find it with google)
See how easy that is!

The problem and danger for us Mac users is that we sometimes stay blind for what is available on other platforms and stay on our cloud. I always learned: dont underestimate the enemy

Who is willing to help me on this?

I saw in your other post that you did try thoth....

Thoth works very well for binaries for my use. All related parts are collected under one title... just just select them to extract and they are added to the queue

As a test I tried to download from the in my previous posting mentioned group the full album Joe Cocker: the best of

Comparison between Bompanews on Windows XP and Newswatcher 3.2 on Mac (OS 10.2) learned me:

In Bompanews one sees the header, under that one finds the covers (jpeg) and the songs.

Select the header and choose download: after 6 min everything is there in a map ready to burn

With Newsreader: under the header there are over 160 parts (????). Select these and extract binaries. After 26 min (!) the alert: some of the articles were skipped because they do not contain any attached files (what a crap!)

Result: No files are downloaded

My conclusion so far- there simply is not a good newsreader to download MP3s out there for the Mac! And that is painful, because I, who uses a Macintosh since the very beginning have to admit to my friends (windows XP users) that they are far ahead for these kind of things.

Please reply if you do not agree

Thoth.

Artwork; you must be doing something wrong!

I've been using Thoth for three weeks or so now, and have downloaded about three megs of MP3's so far - also Ogg Vorbis files, which are a growing alternative to MP3's. Complete albums aren't a problem and I have found it to be utterly reliable.

Never had a problem with it failing to 'see' or download album covers either.

I believe that the trial version of Thoth limits the number of posts you can queue - maybe this was a problem if you did indeed try the trial version?

I'm afraid I totally disagree with your conclusion so far, please don't be so quick to dismiss the Mac!

Do we need three threads for this?? If you've absolutly GOT to be able to download free mp3's from a certain site that won't work with a Mac, then go ahead-- spend a grand on a PC, or just go to the store and buy the damn albums. How many full-length CD's could you pick up for the price of a machine that will otherwise help you to steal them?

Good grief.

you didn't need three separate threads for this. Get lost or grow up.

Your fantastic super Wherzing newsreader 'Bompanews' (or anything like it) doesn't seam to be available for the Mac.
(Mac apps are usually 'simpler' and specialised to a single task. Not of the 'click this big button and the app will whizz through a million actions, leaving you with something at the end, non the wiser at what has just gone on' variety that there seams to be a great deal of on the PC)

Sometimes MTNewswatcher report's that there are missing parts (sometimes there are, but lets say the parts were all there). The solution to this is to drag all the headers from the list strait to a folder, this downloads the entire selection of posts (including the headers, the lot) into one big text file. this file needs decoding before it can be uncompressed, joined together etc. To do this I use an app called 'Rosetta' it's made by the same people as Thoth, get it from the same site.
If there are infact parts missing all is not lost, high traffic newsgroups (the ones I sometimes visit anyway) are also using files called Pars. These files complement, not replace the usual files. The great thing about pars is that you can use them to recreate the missing segments. to decode pars you need an app called 'MacPAR deLux' it's on Version Tracker.
(all this is only information, people can chose what they do with it for them selves)
Realise this Grabbing MP3's and stuff from Newsgroups is Illegal, the best place to ask about how to do it, is probably also a Newsgroup. There are MacOS newsgroups, try asking there, you will more than likely get more direct advice. Asking here is probably not the smartest thing to do.

You don't need 3 seperate threads for this, you know. Jeez.

As for your assertion that there is no good newsreader for the Mac, well you're obviously wrong. You seem to be unwilling to read the instructions that come with the two newsreaders we've mentioned to set them up, and also assume that some a Mac program will magically be just like some specific program available only for Windows.

I use Thoth and MT all the time and haven't had the problems you're having.

in MT, make sure "Show Threads collapsed" is on as well as "Thread articles by reference" and "Sort articles by author."

If this is absolutely something you must do, get Fink and KDE and use one of the Linux readers. You must admit that this isn't exactly a task most people do. Most of us just use Limewire or the like to find songs.
