Hi all --

I am thinking of getting the new Macbook Pro.

My current computer is the MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.33 - it is about 2 years old.

A few months ago I upgraded it's hard drive to a 7200 RPM using Superduper, and it has been great.

I am wondering if I will have any trouble if I simply swap in this drive to my new Macbook Pro, rather than trying to do a data swap and reinstall all software etc.

Any opinions on this? Has anyone done it? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Scott

The newer machine certainly has a newer build of OS X, so no, this will not work. Migration Assistant is probably the easiest way to go.

agreed, for example there is no support for 4 finger gestures in the previous versions of the mbp (although we do know that it's a software limitation and not a hardware limitation, apple better not screw its customers by omitting this again in snow leopard).
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

What about if, after swapping the drive, you started up immediately from the new MBP install disk, and did an archive and install? Wouldn't that install everything necessary for the new MBP to run while preserving everything from the not-so-old 7200 rpm HD?

You could then buy an external case (either a usb/firewire case or a usb/esata case along with an esata expresscard) and clone the 7200 rpm HD onto the original MBP HD in the external case.

Thank you all for the feedback.... I think I may do the migration assistant after all...

Sounds like the safest/easiest approach.....
