From Engadget:

We were all cool with writing a followup on Vladimir Lumelsky’s NASA research work on robotic skins that “feel” tactilely and provoke locomotive reactions, but then Lumelsky and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center had to go and release this totally wack video of a “ballerina” dancing with an obviously suggestive looking “robot” (or whatever that is shrouded in a black cloth that only moves in two planes with a single joint). The whole thing comes off like an eastern european sci-fi porno shot on what appears to be a VCR camcorder from 1987 than it does taxpayer dollars hard at work. Seriously, are we missing the point here, Lumelsky?

I see a robot-arm. But you are right, my 13 year-old (non-existant) brother sees a phallus, too.

ooOOoo...we got Mr. Maturity here! Lighten up. Sure, sometimes a robot arm is just a robot arm. This one, however...

I don't know if it looks like porn... I don't have that sort of vivid imagination. Well, ok, I do, so it isn't.

I want to know why they had a dancer doing that idiotic dance with a robot arm from 1985... I mean really, I had a friend in AI and Robotics that could do that in 1985, minus the dance of course, that would be silly.

Well regardless of what it was supposed to look like, now that the word is out that NASA has dancers playing with robot peni (?) that don't like to be touched, it'll never have that innocent "just a robot arm" look again. Admit it... you all see a ... phallus ... now too no matter how hard your maturity level tries to kick in. Haha

I see no point in that QuickTime film, waste of money.

Did you even bother to read the article?

"Robots move well on their own, especially when nothing is in the way," Lumelsky explained. However, change the environment and a different picture emerges. "Robots should be able to react, but today's robots can't," he said. "That's the difference and that's got to change for exploration."
"You rise," he said, "like Aurora."

Very interesting; interactively moving to avoid a human is an important capability that current generation robots do not have. Very interesting indeed.

And Severed, it does look phallic, that's just not the first thing I thought of. It was an interesting demonstration of robotics, but obviously set up by someone without the...er...non-scientific imagination that many of us here have. I'd have done something like put a hand with a bunch of flowers in it at the end, just to make the shape less suggestive.

When the robots take over they'll definitely want to have the ability to avoid humans.

Maybe they were thinking more along the lines of Alice from the Jetsons... it'd suck to have your house keeper robot try and vacuum up your kids all the time (no pun intended with the "suck" and "vacuum" bits )

Compared to the Japanese, NASA is years behind in robot porn.
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...610_robot.html

But given Q1's reported glitch-related "spasms" at the expo, it may be a while before androids are escorting tour groups or looking after children—which may be just as well.

Slick shoes?! Are you crazy?!
