My friend has an old 200MHz performa tower with 8.1 on it.
She tried to install either 8.6 or 9.0 on it (can't remember) but it said it needed 8.5.

Is 8.5 an update you have to pay for? I haven't been able to find it for download anywhere. But if anyone could point me to some information regarding this that would be great. Thanks.

Yes.

I'd strange that 8.6 and 9 didn't work. Maybe it doesn't have enough RAM???

Did you boot off the install CD? It could be that the installer won't run under 8.1.
A 200mhz performa tower off the top of my head i'd have to say a 6400 or 6360.

I think I understand what is going on here. Your friend has OS 8.1 and is trying to upgrade to OS 8.6. Your friend is probably trying to run the OS 8.6 updated file to update from OS 8.1 to 8.6. It doesn't work that way. You need the full OS 8.5, and only then can you update to 8.6. The same principle holds for OS 9. You need a true OS 9 install CD in order to install OS 9. Downloaded installers will not upgrade from one major OS to another.

I would use 8.6 personally I found on anything under a G3 it was the fastest, 9 lagged on my 180Mhz.

You need 8.5 then update to 8.6 8.6 is free after u have 8.5 installed.
