I want to disable icons from appearing the dock. So I want certain icons to be there but when i open new programs i dont want them to appear in the dock. is this possible?

there's an app called "dockless" that may offer something similar to what you are asking, it allows you to specify which apps are docked and which apps are not... but on a per-application basis.

programs a little strange
it lists all the programs with a check mark
so i unchecked all the programs did a log out
and its still opening in the dock

any ideas?

What you'll probably want is a program like DragThing (http://www.dragthing.com/english/about.html). Just set that up the way you want, and then turn on hiding for the Apple dock (cmd-opt-d), and you're set.
