I was checking out some noise-canceling headphones but it seems like they won't help much for a lawn mower. So I thought about getting a $20 pair of noise protection earmuffs and wearing those over the earbuds. Has anyone tried this, and does it help?

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

Here's how I do it. Since I wear hearing protection when I mow anyway, I just use earbuds and wear the "muff-style" hearing protectors over everything. The wire doesn't break the sound-seal of the muffs, and I can listen to my music fine. And 30db muffs only cost about6 $25.

I second what RAILhead said, Etymotic ER-6i. I have these and use them while I mow. The first time I tried them, without reading the directions, I thought they sucked. Was going to bring them back. Decided to read the little pamphlet and found that I had inserted them incorrectly in my ears.

I usually put a few drops of water on them now before inserting so they fit and slide into my ears easier.

Same here; only I ditched the earbuds for a cheap set of Sony buds -
my ears are too small for the Apple buds - they kill me.

I mow 2-5 acres with a Honda self-propelled, and @ 70 acres of
orchard (with a Ford tractor and flail mower).....way too much time
to be alone in my head without tunes.

I use the Apple in-ear headphones with my iPod Shuffle while mowing the lawn. I can still hear the mower but it's nothing I can't deal with. I'm actually thinking about ditching the Shuffle and picking up a Nano ... but I'm trying to resist!

I wear muff style too with the standard Apple ear buds. I don't know how I ever mowed without music. It's so much nicer.

That would be unChristian. But you wouldn't understand that. You seem to reject any clarification of your ignorance about Christianity so I am not going to waste my time here.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle. Then I realized that the Lord doesn’t work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me.

You are lucky to have a turtle as a lawn mower turtle.

It would in my neighborhood.

We have a neighbor who fishes in the nude - pretty funny
when he gets a fish.

electric mower, with ipod, with standard ipod earbuds, works fine. Only problem is catching the earbud cord on things and them falling out once in a while.

also works well for shovelling snow, raking leaves, etc. All those without lawns are welcome to come to my house and try it out.

Thanks for all the responses...sounds like a few of you have done well with standard noise-protection earmuffs, so I'll give those a try.

If it were up to me, I wouldn't have a lawn at all--it would be nice to let the prairie reclaim itself.

I use my stock apple earbuds when I mow. I don't even have to turn up the volume to deafening. I guess the mower I have is sufficiently quiet.

Is it a Honda mower? My brother has a Honda mower and I am amazed at how quiet it is.

I have a CRAPCAN'TREMEMBERRIGHTNOWEITHERAYARDMANORALAWNBOY and it's about in the middle of lawnmower noise level. I principally bought it because it was garuanteed to start on the first pull for 5 years. Still does actually, and it's 7 years later.

I listen to mine everytime I mow the yard. I went to Lowes and got a set of there Huskvarna? ear protection sets in the chain saw section. I put my apple earbuds on and put these on over them. I can't here the mower at all. Just the vibration lets me know that it is running. Very nice, very comfortable. The huskvarnas are very light.
