I have a late 2006 Macbook that I recently put a new 500GB 7400 RPM hard drive in. I have always noticed that my laptop has ran a bit hot but I am concerned that a larger hard drive will push it to the max temp. Does anyone have any opinions about this? I had to replace my old hard drive since it was toast and the 500 GB was suggested as a good size for someone who would be working with a lot of photos.

I dont hear the fan kick on very often but it seems like it just runs a little hotter when I am doing normal tasks like surfing the net. I tried downloading the temp widget but for some reason it wont let me.

Welcome to MacNN! This post would fit in best in the Mac Notebook forum. A moderator will be happy to move it for you.

Sometimes extra heat is a side effect of a faster hard drive. OS X (actually the firmware) has fail safes built in to protect anything from overheating if you're concerned about that. But it shouldn't have an adverse effect on your MacBook. Enjoy the faster hard drive!

Thanks, its a relief to hear that. I did find another way to monitor temp with the CoreDuo Temp app and it is running a little cooler today after it was turned off all night. I had been on it for a few hours yesterday after I reinstalled OS X so it was a lot hotter.

Don't want to hijack your thread but also didn't want to make a new one.
I'm about to upgrade my MacBook's Hard Drive to 500GB and was wondering if this one would work Newegg.com - Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420AS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive or if you could recommend another one?
My MacBook is the one in my Sig purchased early 2007.

Yes, it'll work for your MacBook. They're actually a fairly popular drive to upgrade to.

Thanks. Should be an easier upgrade this go around since I have a Time Machine to use when I upgrade the drive.

There were a lot of posts here and there about 7200 rpm drives and how marginally they affect the battery life and temperature. You have nothing to worry about. Just enjoy the speed!

Yea thats what I meant as well, 7200 RPM. And I bought the exact same one that JMan09 is looking at. Only I paid $100 at Best Buy.

JMan and minskeep - I forget if this was only an issue with the MacBook Pros, or the MacBooks as well, but anyway, if you're getting that drive, make sure you get the one without G-Force protection. I remember reading that since the MBP already had this built it, the extra G-Force on the drive caused the MBP's internal sensors to not work properly, or something like that.

Ah, nevermind, just found this, which explains it much better than I've poorly attempted to:
