hmmm. i use mailunreadmenu to show me when there's new email....i get an icon on the menubar (my dock is always hidden).

now, in lion, working fullscreen in apps...there is no menubar (except of course when i call it).

is there an app that gives a SMALL popup window when u have email...?

I'm aware of Mail.appertizer, but it's not yet available for Lion.

What's wrong with relying on the "new messages sound"? Unless you have your system on mute all the time.

speakers are usually either off, or being used for music production (so i DON'T want a sound popping up!)

seems, with the new fullscreen option, there should be a popup option for notifications...

Check out Growl, not sure if it works with Mail.app tho.

:edit:
Found Herald, which does exactly what you're looking for (thanks to this Macworld discussion page). just installed and it definitely seems pretty cool. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple implements this in future point updates.

Keep your mail sounds off and let your iPhone tell you when you have new email.

I used, still do, use and old PPC application,MailWatch, to notify me of new mail. What I like about it, and other similar apps do not do, is check the server and let me know via the menu bar when new mail is available on my mail server. That way I can delete mail that I do not want directly off the server and not even download it into Apple Mail.

I wish someone would offer that type of notification as Mail Watch.

not sure how much difference it makes? to delete from Mail, versus before it hits Mail?
anyway, this app Herald let's you open, delete, or view IN MAIL the message it shows in it's popup window...
nice!
