Haha...

Why can't all females look like Barbie: blue eyes, long blonde hair, skinny, with a nice set of boobies.

Don't forget completely hairless except for the hair on their head, and maybe a landing strip downtown?

Hey. Call it what you want. 1.6 million hits definitely shows that I'm not the only person who has uh, "wondered" about Ms. Coulter.

In any event, if being attractive was in New York Ann Coulter is somewhere in Hawaii. Ok, maybe I'll be charitable and say she's several miles off the California coast. Those that fawn all over her and think she's so "hot" are prime examples of guys that will go for anything in a skirt as long as she's anorexic and blonde. I stand by my point ...

Rachel Maddow in all her "butchiness" still looks more feminine than Ann Coulter.

It didn't look like Rachel made a lot of effort to look like she did in the past, to be honest.

The norm is for people to try to look their best as compared to their peers. I don't think doing that reflects a lack of self esteem as much as it does a sense of pride in how they present themselves.

The point is that she choose to do a 180 and look more like a man when it appeared that she was naturally very feminine looking and attractive in the traditional sense. I was just curious as to why she made that choice.

I'm pretty sure there doesn't have to be specific scientific research done in order to show that the majority of men Rachel's age have shorter hair than their female counterparts, and that they way Rachel has chosen to present herself has more in common with the average male than the average female.

Human nature? Last time I checked both genders have a lot of hairstyles, fashions, and types of clothing with which to customize their appearance to their liking.

If you try to look your best compared to your peers because you feel like you should and because you feel uncomfortable otherwise, maybe there is a self-esteem problem. If you try to look your best *for you*, then great, but then if it is for you than whatever you think looks best should be the deciding factor. Sometimes this involves not being a sheep.

What set of emotions and/or beliefs drives people to conformity? This isn't a leading question, I'm not asserting anything in particular, just thinking out loud...

The foundation is an evolutionary one. Your tribe is like you. Other tribes aren't. Since not that long ago (in evolutionary terms) all other tribes were your enemy, the desire to conform was selected for as a valuable survival trait.

From there, a belief system to justify it just accretes.

Makes sense... Would you say that these instincts remain? Are they sort of defaults for when you don't really give them much thought, or do they make logical sense in today's world?

I realize that looking a certain way will affect the strength of the tide you swim against in life, but then again, in many occupations and pursuits there is plenty of room for individuality, and even those where individuality is *expected* (e.g. a musician or other kind of artist). The very essence of being a pundit is expressing this individuality, so I don't think that Maddow puts herself in a big disadvantage expressing her individuality this way.

Why is it though that we give certain people longer leashes in terms of how far from "norms" they can go?

Absolutely not. They're horribly destructive.

Thankfully, we have the ability to chose whether to be slaves to such instincts, but I'd say the social constructs which were borne by it are often a tougher nut to crack.

Hmmm... I was thinking that it might represent a simplistic world view. You wear a tie to go to work, pink is a girl's color, etc. By breaking from those stereotypes/rules you break their concept of a working world (and confound them).

Mr. Burns: Why is that man wearing pink? Smithers, who is that?
Smithers: Homer Simpson, one of your boobs from sector 7-G.
Mr. Burns: Simpson, eh? Judging from his attire, he must be some kind of free-thinking anarchist.
Smithers: I'll alert security.
Mr. Burns: Excellent! These color monitors are already paying for themselves.

Women who wear pants and have short hair have mental issues.

All women should wear dress, skirts, and have long hair.

The men should wear the pants and the women should be in the kitchen with an apron on making them sandwiches.

For a woman, yes.

Men also get their hair done and shave on a regular basis.

Good grooming isn't unnatural. It's a sign you take pride in your appearance.

Complete and utter strawman.

Rachel chose to look naturally feminine and attractive in the traditional sense as a younger woman. For some reason, she chose to do a 180 and adopt an appearance closer to that of the average human male. I never said that she had to conform to anything. Though, what standards we do choose to conform to normally says a lot about our mindset.

There are reasons other than one's mindset that might cause such a thing (abnormal hair loss...excess of male hormones causing things like facial hair, etc.), and if anyone knows of any kind of genetic abnormality or physical ailment Maddow has which caused her to adopt a traditionally male appearance, I'd be glad to hear them.

Otherwise, I was curious what kind of mental changes she underwent that made her decide to adopt such a radically different presentation of herself.

I didn't say she didn't. She looks very well groomed both in the "before" and "after" shots.

However, she appears to be more a well groomed man than a well groomed women in the second shot, as far as the "norm" goes. I was curious why she decided to go with the "well groomed man" image.

Heh...

Dear Ms. Maddow,

I'm just wondering, I'm not a fan of your show or anything like that, but why do you choose to groom yourself like a man?

Sincerely,
stupendousman

I'm sure she will be in complete ruins knowing that she doesn't conform to stupendousman's beliefs as to what "normal" grooming entails.

It's easier, duh. All she needs is Homer Simpson's makeup gun, for the modern woman who only has four fifths of a second to get ready

When I was in high school, I had feathered permed hair, pink frost lipstick, blue eyeliner, and upturned collars. When I was in college I went for long straight hair, dark dark clothes, and red red lipstick. After college my wardrobe and hair choices changed again, and well, haven't changed much since.

Is that an example of mental/hormonal disturbance, or just growing into a sense of self, apart from the tribe? Doesn't everyone do that? Boys too? Is there pressure in high school to conform to the tribe (answer: yes)? Do people after high school rebel a little style-wise? Was she on her way to a softball game and didn't feel the need for lip gloss or a camisole?

All good questions. You could even put some in your letter!

The obvious answer is who we are (and present ourselves as) in high school rarely is the definitive or final statement. We are still growing and maturing for some time after (we never stop, but I would argue there is a spurt from, let's say, 14-22, and even later) and as a result who we are, both internally and externally is quite malleable and subject to revision.
