Hello folks, I'm a new member who, having struggled for a few days to create a post, finally found this corner of the forums to see that I am not alone.

Much luck to the macnn folks, I appreciate your work.

This, as you might gather, then, serves as a test post, of source.

My first post. yay

You can no longer insert text when you hit the "Insert Link" button within a message reply. Can this be fixed? vB 3.5.0 problem? MacNN issue? Both?

I can't post at all - I've been trying since Saturday afternoon. The only thing that seems to work is quick reply. See "test" in the iPod forum.

OK. It seems like there's still some bad mojo. Do let me know if you notice any changes in which bad mojo we're experiencing, though.

In Safari, you see the "lost connection" error page after waiting a bit. Other browsers like Camino just sit there and time out waiting for a response.

Attempt to start thread in THIS forum or in Software forum gives:

Safari can’t open the page “http://forums.macnn.com/newthread.php”. The error was: “lost network connection” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1005) Please choose Report Bug to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.

Yep: Still no go for me in creating a new thread. I tried the Lounge, Mac OS X, and PowerBook sections. No luck. Hope this isn't causing you guys too much stress! We do appreciate the work.

Best of luck!

OK, thanks. I should note for people who are just now finding this thread that we're all quite clear on what the issues are, and I just post when I try out a new potential solution to see if that changed any of the symptoms. I also know that it really sucks, and it's as big a headache for us as it is for all of you.

If we could downgrade, I would have done that already. It's not possible to downgrade, which is why we're still working on finding a fix for this problem. For what it's worth, we've tried out several things that could have been the problem (e.g. screwed up indexes in some of the vBulletin database tables), but fixing those problems hasn't appeared to solve this new post thing.

There's another vBulletin bugfix update that fixes a few database-related problems (though I'm betting it won't fix the major one we're experiencing), and we'll be applying that soon. The complexity of the issue has to do with the fact that it's not simply the database (since that works for all the other sites using it) and it's not simply vBulletin (since it works for other people using the software, and even with the stock templates, the forums screw up), but it's something having to do with the combination of the two. It's some new factor in vB 3.5 that's not a bug but is causing some unforeseen issues with our database in particular, and these kinds of bugs are in general hard to track down.

Anyway, we're still looking. Thanks so much for being patient with this!

Yes, posting new threads is currently broken. Please don't post about this until I post again requesting feedback (since nothing will have changed until then); it'll help to keep the signal/noise ratio in this thread as high as possible.

Thanks.

We've upgraded the forums to vBulletin 3.5.1 (a bugfix/maintenance release) and made some changes to our MySQL backend. (The longer-than-usual downtime for the upgrade tonight had to do with the fact that we needed to update yet more templates as part of the 3.5.1 update.) Please let me know if you notice any changes regarding the problems we've been experiencing.

UPDATE: I should note that I think it's unlikely that these changes will fix the problems, but it would still be useful to know if there's any change in how often things are screwing up, etc.

Thanks.

with our luck they'll release 3.5.2 tomorrow morning.
please let us know if this latest update fixed anything, or if our time was wasted and we should commit some kind of self mutilation.

Any chance to get the Search Results page to display correctly? (IE New Posts page)

Seems the cells in the table are off.

Here is the fix on how to do so if needed:

Search Templates -> search_results Template

Find:
[html]<tr>
<td class="thead" colspan="2">&nbsp;</td>
<td class="thead" width="75%">$vbphrase[thread] / $vbphrase[thread_starter]</td>
<td class="thead" width="150" align="center" nowrap="nowrap">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>
<td class="thead" align="center" nowrap="nowrap">$vbphrase[replies]</td>
<td class="thead" align="center" nowrap="nowrap">$vbphrase[views]</td>
<td class="thead" width="25%">$vbphrase[forum]</td>

<if condition="$show['inlinemod']">
<if condition="$show['popups']">
<td class="vbmenu_control" id="imod" align="center"> <script type="text/javascript"> vbmenu_register('imod'); </script> </td>
<else />
<td class="thead" align="center">
<input type="checkbox" name="allbox" id="checkall_all" title="$vbphrase[check_uncheck_all]" onclick="inlineMod.check_all()" />
</td>
</if>
</if>
</tr>[/html]

Replace With:
[html]<tr>
<td class="thead">&nbsp;</td>
<td class="thead" width="65%">$vbphrase[thread]</td>
<td class="thead" width="10%" align="center" nowrap="nowrap">$vbphrase[thread_starter]</td>
<td class="thead" width="150" align="center" nowrap="nowrap">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>
<td class="thead" align="center" nowrap="nowrap">$vbphrase[replies]</td>
<td class="thead" align="center" nowrap="nowrap">$vbphrase[views]</td>
<td class="thead" width="25%">$vbphrase[forum]</td>

<if condition="$show['inlinemod']">
<if condition="$show['popups']">
<td class="vbmenu_control" id="imod" align="center"> <script type="text/javascript"> vbmenu_register('imod'); </script> </td>
<else />
<td class="thead" align="center">
<input type="checkbox" name="allbox" id="checkall_all" title="$vbphrase[check_uncheck_all]" onclick="inlineMod.check_all()" />
</td>
</if>
</if>
</tr>[/html]

Press Save, and that should fix the display problem on the search results page.

Still can't post any new threads in any forum. I've used:

Internet Explorer 6 via Windows XP
FireFox 1.07 via Windows XP
Safari via 10.4.3
FireFox 1.06b via 10.4.3

I've also tried making new accounts and that doesn't help any either. I've tried using completely different computers in completely different locations (two from work, two from home.)

ANOTHER problem:
When I use the EDIT feature (very nice to have it in-line!), the status bar starts talking like the page is reloading... but it never does redraw the page (showing that my editing has taken).
But when I RELOAD the thread's page it shows that the editing DID take place.
[And I thought that this new in-line editing was working just fine for me a couple days ago.]

yep - about 50% of the AJAX inline edits / quick posts never 'finish' - although they do actually work (load the thread in another tab and you'll see the edit was successful.)

edited for a test. (second edit)

Actually, I just had the EDIT feature insert a NEW post (with editing)... tho it didn't show until I loaded the thread in another tab.

I thought I was clear in a previous post that this is a problem on our end, not yours. Please don't waste your time trying all these things -- they definitely will not make a difference.

I'm temporarily disabling AJAX to reduce the number of factors we're looking at simultaneously. My assumption is that edits and replies should now work without any problems; please post here if that's not the case. We've also moved some stuff off our database server to reduce load, so let me know whether you see a reduction in the number of thread creation errors as well.

Hmm - just tried editing my post above (obviously without the AJAX-stlye editing) - got another timeout error:

The error was: “lost network connection” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1005)
edit - weirdly the second edit worked. It seems very regular - exactly every other edit works.

edit2 - this edit should fail. (oddly it didn't)

edit3 - hmm perhaps not exactly every other edit... (this one failed.)

edit4 - this may work?

Here is a tip for posting new threads. Write your post and name the thread something like: A

Then you can post it. Just edit the name afterwards. Hope you solve this soon gzl!
