I figured that was only 'power.' Would the keyboard cord be long enough to go through an arm like that, or would it just be better to go wireless?

edit: nm, I guess you could get a USB extension too.

Not at all... while you can move the iMac G4 in many ways, the body has a footprint you can't remove from the equation. I could mount a new G5 iMac in a roll top desk with one of these arms. They come in thousands of configurations...

The G4 iMac was flexible, but it took up almost as much space as an eMac (relatively speaking).

Wireless would be nice...

Also, power and usb along with ethernet and even some other USB and firewire connectors... Needless to say, you could make your setup VERY clean and then you are done, you would still have a desk.

The down side is these things cost anywhere from $150 to $300 and beyond.

Perhaps, though I am using the G4 and it has never been an issue with me before. (Besides the fact that their is that space beneath the screen on the G5)

This doesn't qualify because it's exactly what people have been speculating about for years.

The original iMac and the lampshade iMac would both qualify as innovative and original. This does not. It's functional. It's elegant. I like it. If I was in the market for a new iMac I would be happy. But it definitally isn't groundbreaking.

What would have been? I don't know. They are the huge corporation stocked with genious designers and massive amounts of R+D money. It's there job to impress me, not the other way around.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

Yes, but I'm guessing the new G5 iMac will be considerably more efficient, plus, if you use the VESA mount... you could end up with only the keyboard and mouse on the desk.

Well, I really like the new design, and was about to pull the trigger and get one for the girls for Christmas, but a few things bother me:

1. Rev A machine.

2. The graphics chip (would like a GF 5900 or ATI 9600).

3. I'd like at least a 2GHz G5.

So, yes, I will be buying one, but it'll be a Rev B model (which will probably address all of the above). Should be out some time in Feb... maybe in time for Valentine's Day.

eMac optical drive: Mounted horizontally, writes 8x

iMac optical drive: Mounted vertically, writes 4x

That's right, the eMac has a better optical drive than the iMac.

There is a lot of whining on the 'net about the thick bezel ("ugly slab of lucite") along the bottom of the screen.

I don't mind it. It's the perfect place to stick Post-Itļæ½ notes.

Face it 'Fad: you're really happy about the new iMac, because Apple just handed you justification for a Dual 2.5 on a silver platter.

Check out the iMac video:

Seeing the actual product (instead of an Apple pic) kinda changed my mind.

I like it! Good idea to market it alongside the iPod. It feels as if the iMac is an extension to the iPod rather than the opposite.

Eeeeek .... ack ... *gurgle* .. cough. RDF setting in. I just watched the video stream of Phil Schiller's intro. It seems quite a bit cooler when he's moving it around and showing how it works and how thin it is.

I distinctly remember being perplexed with the iMac G4 design for a few days when it came out ... then really liking it a lot. Starting to feel that this will be the same now. Rev B, here I come !!!!

Just saw the new imac, and WOW.
There is only one big turn off for me and that is the price.
$1,299 (imac) and $1,999 (Powermac G5) I would just go for the higher model. I get a dual processor, super drive, 900MHz bus (vs) 533MHz, plus expandability all for $700 more. Factor out a monitor since I already have a 17" LCD.

OK... your willing to spend a quarter grand more on a system.
Most people are looking at a 2-3 grand difference though with the monitor.
But then again, you could almost afford to buy the iMac and get yourself an iBook for that money.

I really love the look of this machine.

I like the digital 5.1 output.

I am not a power user, and not interested in the FPS type of games. I do love good looking things. I am also a nomad; I have moved like 37 times (preparing a next move in a month!) so portability is a must, which is why I have a PB 12 1GHz and a 20" LCD. I scan the magazines and all written docs to save space.

I had a (lovely)Plus, then a (funny but clumsy) 6100, a (hot) PB 5300cs, then a (versatile but waisted) PB1400, then a (fantastic) PBG3, then a (gorgeous) TIG4 and now that lovely PB12 with its LCD.

That iMac G5 is very appealing to me, and the price (2500 $CAN) makes me crazy...

I am very tempted. The big cheeze graters are great, but I doon't need them, although, I wih I could plug the wonderful 30" LCD in my 12"... but that will remain a dream for the next few years...

I am a sucker for Apple products since the LISA so... To me, this iMac inspires the digital hub, because it is so small, looks discrete (as they say, it disappears in the background).

I love it.

i just saw the video and i have to admit it. this is ahead of a powermac g5 on my wishlist.

it's cheaper and it is less cumbersome (space wise).

i am a graphic designer and i have to admit, a g4 500 is doing the job just fine *right now* ļæ½ if i got this next year it would blow me half way to Texass

Given the 20 inch Cinema Display alone costs 1299, the 20inch iMac is a really good value.

Not to ignore that the line needs more RAM, HD and a GPU upgrade...

I dunno, this image makes it look rather beastly and not elegant like the last iMac. And mind you this is with just 2 cords coming out of it.

Didn't you have a Cube? Those things had cords strewn for yards across everything. This is certainly miles beyond that as far as clutter and elegance goes.
