WTF!? He needs to stop pandering to his buddy Vincente Fox and get serious about securing our borders. "He said he would pressure Congress to further loosen immigration law." WHAT!??? Loosen it more? How does he thinks some of the 9/11 terrorists came to our country? Via the border from Mexico. For someone who talks about national security he isn't doing much to help it along. I'm glad we have a congress willing to stand up on this issue.

How are these people who are "monitoring" the activities then reporting them to border patrol vigilante's Mr Bush!? If he wants to have such a porous border with Mexico he should follow a suggestion by Michael Savage. Tell His buddy Vincente Fox that we want 1 barrel of oil for every illegal immigrant. I'm sure Fox would stop the flow of illegals mighty quick.

IMO he should be applauding these people for wanting to help out. They should be given more authority than just reporting them to border patrol.

I have no doubt that this line was taken completely out of context and/or misquoted. If Bush indeed said this, it would be the top headline.

I read other articles on this meeting, and none highlighted this phrase which, again, would undoubtedly have taken top billing.

Here's one... with some actual context of what Bush may have been discussing:
...their neighborhood pact. It's designed to make trade more efficient and borders more secure without obstructing business and traffic.

"We've got a lot of trade with each other," Bush said. "We intend to keep it that way. We've got a lot of crossings of the border. I intend to make our borders more secure and facilitate legal traffic."

Bush said he promised Fox that he would continue to press Congress to come up with "commonsense" immigration policy.

"In other words, if this is in place, someone will be able to come and work from Mexico in the United States and be able to go home back and forth across the border in a legal fashion. That seems to make sense to me," Bush said.

Here is also a quote from here "You've got my pledge - I'll continue working on it," Bush told Fox during a joint news conference here at Baylor University. "You don't have my pledge that Congress will act because I'm not a member of the legislative branch."

It SHOULD be a headline...whatever he might have said. It has gotten completely out of hand. Constantina wire should be protecting the entire 2000 miles from people entering the country illegally...Homeland defense or not. There is a system for entering the country legally. Time to enforce it!!!

You gotta tame the beast before you let it out of its cage.

I'll have to see if I can find the articles. I believe at least 2 of them came to this country via Mexico on student visas or something.

In order to effectively discern legal traffic from illegal traffic, we'll need many more "agents" working the border than the Bush administration has allotted. This is a dismal Administration failure in my opinion. I agree, it's time to friggin' enforce a border policy and mean it. In a "culture of life" we shouldn't encourage one to pack 15 "illegals" up into the wheelwell of an ice cream truck and head to the promised land. I don't care how many votes he loses over it.

Bush Shouldn't worry about getting votes. He won't need them for a 3rd term. He NEEDS to stop pandering to his buddy Fox and lay down the law with him. If he isn't able to allot more border patrol agents then he should be supporting these people who he calls "vigilantes" They are NOT they are just trying to help protect the border of the country they love. They are doing it FOR FREE. Bush talks about defending out country and our borders. It's time to step up to the plate President Bush.

Anyone who thinks a lax immigration policy is based on loyalty to Pres. Fox seriously lacks fundamental understanding of the issue.

loyalty to the big, labor-intensive industries in this country that want a steady supply of cheap labor. As long as they can keep the labor side of the supply:demand equation artificially low then Corporate America can keep labor costs artificially low. If they had to really follow the laws of supply and demand then they would be paying 2-3 times as much for their labor costs. Instead, they charge the consumer the same price while keeping costs low and increasing profits.

How many of them are actually claimed as employees?
They are called sweat-shops, and I'm sure these numbers are far from the truth.

It is impossible to know exactly how many illegal immigrant workers pay taxes. But according to specialists, most of them do. Since 1986, when the Immigration Reform and Control Act set penalties for employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants, most such workers have been forced to buy fake IDs to get jobs.

Available for about $150 in just about any immigrant neighborhood in California, a typical fake ID package includes a green card and a Social Security card. It provides cover for employers, who, if asked, can plausibly assert that they believe all their workers are legal. But it also means that workers must be paid by the book -- payroll tax deductions and all.

IRCA, as the immigration act is known, did little to deter employers from hiring illegal immigrants or to discourage them from working. But for Social Security's finances, it was a great piece of legislation.
