Hi there. I have a few problems since I upgraded to OS X Lion and I was wondering if you all could help. Is this the right place to ask?

Here are the issues I have been having:

1) Preview takes a lot longer to open than it did in Snow Leopard. It also has a tendency to open PDFs that I've closed. Also, the "drawer" doesn't open any longer and I don't see an option to do that.

2) Word also has a weird tendency to also open documents that was old and I am not longer working on.

Things seem slower in general. Should I do a clean install? The computer came with 10.5, then I put on 10.6 and now it's got 10.7.

You can turn off opening previously opened documents in the Preference Pane - General - Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. Make sure this is UNCHECKED.

I had an issue of Preview and TextEdit taking extremely long to open. Turned out: the culprit was the Instant On addition installed with Audio Hijack or Airfoil. Once I de-installed it, it would open in a breeze.
I found this when looking for errors in the Console application.

Also, check this website for known compatibility problems:

App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps

Hope that helps!

Did not see it under Restore.

The whole item is called

"Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps"

It's in the third section.

You have to sift through the entries and look for items that cause errors.
Sorry, I can not give a step-by-step instructions.
If you use the Instant On addition, just deinstall it and see if that fixes your issues.

I found it. Why would Apple ever enable that by default? Horrible!

A helper app installed with Audio Hijack or Airfoil (both 3rd party apps).
If you don't have those apps, you don't have Instant On.

Ok it's working much better now that things aren't coming up again. How do I get the tray in Preview to come back?

Not sure what you mean by "tray" or "drawer" ?

Do you mean the Thumbnails or Table of Content ? You torn those on/off in the menu "View".
Or you can add buttons for that to the Toolbar (right-clikc on Toolbar - Customize Toolbar...")

I told you where it went. You turn this "sidebar" on/off in the menu "View".
If you want buttons, you need to customize the Toolbar.

That's in the "View" menu, too, where it should be.
