New iMac with Lion, as sig.

1) Waking from sleep, I don't get the whirr I used to on my older iMac, does the new one now store wake-up info in memory ?
It does wake very quickly, and silently.
I put it to sleep from menu bar, or an app kindly written for me by a member for my older iMac, or Energy Saver auto.

When I wake new iMac from sleep, I note it has collected Mail and RSS feeds whilst sleeping, something my older iMac 10.6.8 never did.

Is it simply because I had the Wake for Network Access box ticked ?

I thought that was for incoming access only.

I'll untick it and see what happens.

I've just read that WFNA fires up the iMac, but not the display.

Mac OS X v10.6: About Wake on Demand

If this is the case, what do you recommend, WFNA or not.

My Mail is checked every 5 minutes when awake.
How often when asleep ?

Thanks.

Update:

WFNA unticked, still collected Mail and RSS feeds whilst sleeping.
Back of iMac warm

I've quit AlarmClock 2 to see if this app is keeping my iMac awake

I'll also try

Is there a way to monitor what my iMac is running whilst "sleeping"

I did sleep the iMac after quitting various apps, same results each time

Measuring temperatures...

You could try Activity monitor. Leave it at the front graphing something, then put the Mac to sleep for a minute. Wake it again and check the graph for gaps.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I was wondering how to get AM to monitor during sleep.

Activity Monitor can't monitor anything during real sleep because the processor is nearly completely off in that mode. If you're sure that clients are updating data while your computer is supposed to be in sleep, then it's obviously not sleeping. The monitor may be off but the computer isn't.

My iMac now does actually appear to be fully sleeping, after removing some apps like alarm clock.

Note the break in temperature measurements, Mail, NetNewsWire QUIT, ie no web access.

I put it into sleep 4 hours ago, after two hours it actually stopped monitoring temps, and the back of the iMac was cold to the touch just now.

Recent sleep history shows the same thing ...

It seems logical that alarm clock would have an effect on sleep. Also, wake on LAN or wake on WAN. I'm sure there are one or two others.

Looks fairly consistent now, after putting iMac to sleep, it goes into a low state for a couple of hours, then total blackout after that, as seen here on multiple recent occasions.

Found a solution, and yes, my iMac wasn't sleeping properly

Measured mains current consumption

iMac off 2w
iMac on 75w
iMac Display Sleep 35w
iMac Sleep 34w

All USB ports, powered

I installed NMS 2.4b
NMS 2.4b (Mac), from Sliced Apple (NMS) - Free Downloads on ZDNet | Shareware, Trialware, Evaluation Software

Cured

But don't know what was stopping system sleep

After NMS
iMac off 2w
iMac on 57w
iMac Display Sleep 35w
iMac Sleep 2w

All USB ports, still powered

Strangely enough, after running NMS, with it disabled, sleep is still

iMac Sleep 2w

So perhaps it's "cured" whatever the reason for not sleeping properly was ?

A quick test of temperature measurement show NO monitoring during sleep now.

After sleep, back of iMac is now cold to the touch
Other internal readings much cooler now too

Everything is now measurably cooler in full sleep, 2 hours.
This is how I will monitor full sleep after I remove the inline mains power monitor.

Two "solutions" mentioned elsewhere I haven't tried yet

1) PRAM reset

2) SMC reset

What do you recommend ?
Thanks
