I have a G4 that has Jaguar installed. It won't boot. The Apple logo appears and then a circle with a line through it appears over the Apple logo.

This has happened twice and the first time I reinstalled the OS.

What could be causing this?

Several things may be wrong.
The icon you see means "Cannot find startup disk"

Either you have the starup disk setting corrupted/wrong or the system folder is messed up or the hard drive is messed up or...

I'd make some checkup on the hard drive [using installer disk]

The user of the machine moved some critical OS X files (mach, mach.sym, mach_kernel, etc) to another folder while in OS 9.

It's ok though, it was a nice billable support call.
