Google has created a new video showing off the user interface of the Google Glass headset. The video, an updated version of a previous video, has been revealed at the same time as Google opens up its Glass pre-orders to non-developers, allowing the Explorer edition of the headset to be ordered by "bold, creative individuals."

The new video shows a more refined UI, this time located in the top right of the image as a translucent image. Users are shown taking part in various activities, taking images, video, and using Google Now-style notifications and cards. The phrase "OK Glass" appears to act as a keyword for Glass to listen to the user and follow commands, similar to how Kinect uses the term "Xbox," while the name "Google" is being used for web searches. Towards the end, a non-verbal operation of the Glass is shown, demonstrating that it will still accept non-vocal instruction. The expanded pre-orders takes the form of a competition, where prospective users have to explain how they would use Google Glass through social media. Using Google+ or Twitter and using the hashtab #ifihadglass, entrants can use up to 50 words, five images, and a 15-second video clip to show off their plans, though it is only open to US residents aged 18 or over. A total of 8,000 people will be invited to special events in mid-to-late March and will be given the option of purchasing the Explorer edition, something that cost the original registrants $1,500 for the privilege.

That video made me think that having all those messages appear in my peripheral vision would be very distracting while wearing Glass.

Can't wait to see someone with these on so I can go up to them and say "Ok glass, look up gay porn". So many fun things to do with this

How Apple fanboys are quick tho criticize any new device as long as it does not come from it's favorite provider overpriced electronics. Apple used to be home for indication, the arts, and just plain forward looking concepts; now it just stagnates with a dated user interface with no concession to personalization or openness, making it's users slave to it with an obligation to rely on Apple for everything from it's proprietary bangles and connectors, to the not user replaceable batteries.

Sorry, could you point out where the actual criticism is in this thread? There doesn't seem to be any.

There's a little bit of good-natured ribbing about the Borg-like look of the things, and a note expressing concern about distracted driving (which would be the users' fault, not Google's). So where's the actual criticism? Oh wait, that doesn't fit in with your preconceived narrative about Apple bad, Google good ...

The rest of your worthless comment applies equally to Google as it does to Apple, reminding us all of the pointlessness of your contributions and presence. I even had to delete a duplicate post of yours because apparently you can't even manage to post correctly, even after all the time you've wasted here ...

...as well as the time that you've wasted with your comment. Are you really that bored... just waiting for people to make anti-Apple comments so you can pump up your ego and publicly blast them on these forums? Get a life, man.

The reason that some people have double posts is because this website isn't the best designed. In fact, many double posts exist. Whatever "bridge" you guys are using between the forums and the news site is buggy at best.

The technologist in me thinks this is awesome. Another step toward Dennou Coil or GiTS:SAC in the real world.

And then I think about the actual, practical use of it as shown in this video, and it's about the most horrifying piece of life-consuming technology I can possibly imagine. If somebody walks up to me wearing these, it will take everything I have not to punch him or her in the face.

Also, if somebody walks up to me with one of these on and starts talking to me, I want to immediately take my phone out of my pocket with one hand and start looking at it, then stick a camera in their face with the other hand and start hitting the shutter button. Because for all practical purposes, that's exactly what they can be doing to you at any moment.
