I finally went to CompUSA and looked at the extensions installed on a computer running only Word 2001, but none of the other MS Office 2001 applications. Internet Explorer may have been installed on it but I can't recall.
The extensions installed are as follows:
Microsoft C Runtime Library 4.0b (New)
Microsoft Clipboard Library 1.0 (New)
Microsoft Component Library 2.30 (Updated from v. 2.2.4)
Microsoft Framework 5.0.2 (No change)
Microsoft Internet Library 5.0.3 (Updated from v. 5.0.2)
Microsoft OLE Automation 2.3.0.2426 (Updated from v.2.20.4244 )
Microsoft OLE Library 2.3.0 (Updated from v.2.2.4)
Microsoft Portability Library 4.0.b (New)
Microsoft Structured Storage 2.3 (Updated from v. 2.2.4)
MS Font Library v.2.1.3 (No change)
Note: Microsoft Hyperlink Library v.1.0 and Microsoft RPC Runtime Library v. 4.0.3 are no longer installed.
I am running Internet Explorer 5.5b1, Outlook Express 5.0.2, and MS Office 98 with all updates installed. So all the references above to "New", "Updated", and "No change" refer to deviations from my present system.
Is anyone running both Office 98 and Office 2001 with a different set of extensions installed? It would be interesting to compare notes.
Also, if the updated components will offer improved functionality and greater compatibility with my current Office apps and the latest versions of other IE software, you'd think MS would offer an upgrade to Office 98 that added just these latest extensions and eliminated the ones no longer needed.
