I've been a member at various gyms for many years and I see the same thing over and over.
There's usually a basket or a place to hang your car keys. I don't get that. I mean, there's usually a notice to make sure you don't store valuables in your locker, or make sure you lock your locker. That's great but I'm leaving my keys for someone to just walk off with them? Like many current cars/trucks, I have a little button to bleep-bleep it, so a potential thief could easily find my truck.
Am I the only one who sees this as a risk?
by the way I figure my keys are safer locked in my locker then said basket.

Never
EVER
Leave anything valuable in the gym, even in your locker.

Almost every gym I've attended has this as well. I've thought about being worried about it, especially when key fobs all have the car's logo on them now... but for some reason it just doesn't bother me too much.

Don't the lockers have proper locks?
But I've never seen the basket thing, sounds dangerous.

I'm glad I made your bleep-bleep day
The only stuff I leave in my locker (which is locked) is my wallet and cell phone, mostly because I need them and they're usually on my person when I walk into the gym.
I've wondered about the dropping off the keys in the basket for a while and it seems asinine but I don't hear too many people complaining about losing their car that way. Still, I'm not going to take a chance.

Too many or anybody? Cos if anybody complained, I'd be like, bleep-bleep, man.

Stop this gratuitous bleep-bleep ing at once or you shall face the wrath of khan!
It's giving me flashbacks from that Apple ad "my computer was like, beep beep beep beep, and I was like, ..." argghhhh!

Almost nobody has a locker in my gym (there are only a few). Everyone leaves their bags and coats by the front, out in the open in a designated area. My wallet and iPhone sit there too. Never been a problem as far as I can tell. And the desk will hold onto super valuable things if you ask.
That said, I've never seen an area for car keys, even when I was out in the 'burbs.

I've not heard of any problem, but that's not enough to allay my concerns.

It is reasons such as this that my key ring has three keys on it. My house key, my van key, and my other van key. No remote fob, nothing but those three keys. Easy to carry no matter what you are wearing. Even into water.
All other keys go into a cabinet that is locked with a combination lock.
I do keep a grocery shopping keychain with all those annoying "membership" tags though. But that only goes with me when I am grocery shopping.

Nor should it be.

And you think that's safe?
Call from Visa: "Hi, Starman...did you charge $2k in crap last night?".
You don't want that call. Keep your crap on you at all times.

The cabinet is locked in my bedroom closet. If they are not safe there then nothing is safe anywhere.
I run a group home and am currently the caretaker of a vacant group home. I have a LOT of keys and documents in my possession. If I carried all of the keys I have I would need steel suspenders to keep my pants up.

As I hit "Submit Reply", I thought "he probably means at the gym". Obviously you've never seen my masculine physique, otherwise you'd know I never go to the gym.
But I also thought maybe he doesn't mean the gym... at this point I got confused and took a nap. Nothing like a good nap to help you forget your confusions.
