I have a Mac Pro desktop and a Macbook Pro laptop.

Love both of them, but have a major problem with the
DELETE key.

Explain this please....

On the Mac Pro desktop the DELETE key works by deleting text
from the first letter foward.

On a Macbook Pro the DELETE key works by deleting text from
the last letter backwards (which I hate!)

Is this common? Is there a way to fix the DELETE key so
it deletes in the manner I prefer?

Thanks!

On your MacBook the delete key you speak of is actually backspace, hence it works the other way round. I think my pressing command+backspace or some combo, you can make it work like the delete key.

The Control+Delete combination gives me forward deletion on my MBP and my wife's iBook. That was a real issue for me when we first got the iBook.

Oops. Posting on the fly from a different computer gets me in a lot of trouble. It IS the "fn" key, not the Control key. Sorry.

I use a program called DoubleCommand to remap the backward slash key to forward-delete (I use forward delete that much). Not sure if the key is in the same position on US keyboards, on my UK keyboard it's next to return (I believe our return key is a different shape).

NJ, what program is it doing this in? The default functionality should be to backspace. (The one above the Return key.) And on normal sized keyboards, the other Delete => key under Help next to End should delete forward.

But some programs can be configured to switch functionality. Maybe your preferences are set?

fn+backspace = delete letter forward ; fn+alt+backspace = delete word forward; alt+backspace = delete word backward. Very cool.
