Does anyone know what port mapper is, and why it might be stalling my OSX startup? During startup, it seems to stall at Port Mapper for 30-60 seconds before continuing.

Any ideas?

TIA

I thought that port mapper has to run at startup because all applications that connect via ports communicate to the port mapper (port 111) to get the port the specific service is running on.

1.For example application "server 1" tells port mapper it is wanting a port.

2.Port mapper assigns port 133 (For example).

3."Server 1" on machine 2 connects to port mapper on machine 1 and requests the port number of the application "Server 1"

4. Port mapper replies port 133.

5. "Server 1" can now communicate on channel 133 as they both know what channel they are running on.

Thats what my lectures tell me..

But the OS X boot screen says starting up port mapper or such like...

And according the command line it is disabled / not responding..

So sorry dunno theory and real life seem to differ.

Edwin

p.s. One hint do you have any servers or an ethernet cable plugged in?
There is a documented boot bug with network connections. So boot up with no ethernet cable if it boots fine then goto macfixit.com for a fix :-) Good Luck
