I think Apple is playing on the idea that all of their customers are blind fan-boys like you who will just accept any mistake Apple makes and blame it on the customer as being overly "critical". It is quite apparent that a new "quality" laptop should work correctly right when it is recieved, and when a replacement won't even be shipped for over 25 days, I'd say that isn't very devoted to the customer. The underproduction of the MBP is a HORRIBLE business plan. The company should have produced a certain amount of the product before it went off and shipped it, because yes, there WILL be some defects, and people WILL need replacements. Making a customer who pre-ordered the product wait another month after he recieves a broken product is poor management.
Very well said, this is what I meant by my post. $2000 is a lot to pay for a computer let alone one that is supposed to be cutting-edge. I personally feel I can survive on my 15" 1.33 powerbook for the next couple years until I'm out of college before I move up, and by then the intel switch should be in full swing anyways.

My MBP just wouldn't start up. I could hear the hard drive, but no screen. I did everything that the manual said....nothing. Finally, I tried pulling one of the pieces of ram out....aha. screen. Shut it back down, put the ram back in, and it works perfect. Check your ram!! It just might need to be re-seated! Hope this helps.

Some of these DOA's are caused by the shipper as well, so these incidents don't necessarily indicate a manufacturing flaw on Apple's side.

Latest update:

Still no word from Apple since shipping back my CTO 2.16. I was able to find a standard MBP 2.0 at my local Apple Store yesterday. I decided to take the 2.0 and cancel my replacement order. Got the MBP home and started transfering files over. The machine is amazing compared to my PB 12". After getting through the initial registration and installing various applications, I showed my wife the intergrated iSight camera and guess what happened next?

The iSight was dead. Go figure. Called Apple Care to troubleshoot and no go. I was then transferred over to a Product Specialist and after going through some additional steps, he told me that the camera is dead. Here I was thinking I would have to send another MBP in again. Instead the rep told me that he would call a couple of stores in my area to see if he could find one and arrange an exchange for me. He found one and now I am on my third MBP.

So far, third time is a charm (let's hope).

Dude, your luck sucks. Then again, despite that, I'm envious that you get to play with one while I sit here, waiting...

Mine isn't DOA, but has a lot of the problems reported. Most annoying is the distored audio through the right speaker. I called Apple today about it, got switched over to a product specialist, and they are going to call me back in a few days to let me know what engineering thinks. Whatever that means.

My display also flickers when the brightness is reduced, it sometimes won't wake from sleep, the display has a darker haze on the right side and is brighter at the bottom, and finally, it also has that high-pitched sound, although that doesn't bother me much in use - but in conjunction with all of the other things, it annoys me.

But it's still faster than a Russian race horse that needs to take a piss, right?

wow...ok, my macbook just will not start cold. Is that weird or what? i've tried all the "reset" procedures...no go. I turn it on in the a.m., I get the little light in the front....no screen. Try it again. No screen. Leave it on, light in the front for about 10 minutes, turn it off, then on, bingo. Anyone have this? My lovely macbook is free of all the other listed problems, so I'm hesitant to send it in. If I shut it down while it's warm, and start it back up, it starts perfectly. Is this weird or what? Any thoughts on this are greatly appreciated!

The noise of my MBP is starting to irritate me. In fact, there are two distinct noises: one is the higher-pitched noise emanating from the processor. The other originates from the display when it is not at full-brightness. The second of the two is most disturbing, and I intentionally find myself making sure the brightness is at full strength. My last qualm is the occasional flicker of the display at lower-level brightness.

I'm hesitant to call Apple or go into a store because the MBP is now my only computer, and I cannot wait for a replacement. Hmm...I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet. Anyone have some insight into whether a replacement can be had sooner or whether I can keep my current one until a replacement were to come?

Other than these minor issues, I LOVE my MBP. It is so much faster than my old iBook and at full brightness, the display is gorgeous. iSight and MagSafe are bonuses, too. Solidly-built, just a few minor kinks Apple needs to work out.

How did it come to this? Goodbye PowerPC. | sensory output

Question: I got a call back from Apple Thursday afternoon telling me that I could return my MacBook Pro or get a replacement. Given all of the problems with these things, I don't want to run the risk of getting another defective MBP. So that was Thursday...shouldn't I have received an email Apple about the return, or will the shipping tags just show up next week?

I have the second noise you talk about... it's not really that much of a bother to me. It seems to come from many of the PC laptops I've worked with as well.

I definitly don't have that first noise, and I'm sorry to hear you might have to go through the return process! I really hope it goes smoothly.
