Is there any way to get Finder (in column or list view) to list the subdirectories first (in alphabetical order) followed by the files (in alphabetical order)?
I seem to recall having read about a similar tweak in an old edition of MacWorld, but my memory and Google-Fu have failed me.
Thanks!

Nope, but you could add a space to all your folder names which would achieve the same effect. There are Automator actions that will allow you to do this in one go for all folders.

Sorting by 'Kind' in list view will give you what you want, but there is no option in Column view (very annoyingly).

Someone has to have some kind of hack. Right? Sort of?
Adding a space before the name only works if no programs are looking for that directory. Do it with Microsoft Office and you end up with a new Miscrosoft Office directory.
Typical.

I'm pretty sure a certain unnamed, yet to be released, big cat will have this feature.

This is one of the top reasons I installed PathFinder. PathFinder does that "properly".

WHOA! I'd never seen that app!
AWESOME! Thanks!
I only wish I could replace the stock Finder with it.

Supposedly, you can. Check out >>this thread<<.
Haven't tested it, personally. I also thought it was supposed to be easier than that, but apparently, I was wrong.
