No, and proud of it.

I'll agree with UNTiMac in that some frats are different, but we all assume the 'Kappa Tappa Kegga' meathead frat when these topics come up. I can't stand those idiots - all they think about is 'pounding hole' and saying 'whassup brah?' They are of a lower species.

I was kinda in a frat.

Got my degree through them and had best times of my life too.

Still keep in contact with my friends, and you also get some benifits afterwards. Plus, people who are/have been part of them always help eachother out. Even helped me get out of a speeding ticket back in the states just a bit ago.

My school is too small (2500) to have real frats. We have fake ones, where people sign up for the parties and drunken freshmen.

Now what is a frat/sorority ? I think we do have a few of those things over here (if it is what I think it is) but it's not all that popular.

I don't know about Belgium, but they have it in Germany.
It's called "Verbindung". There are even a few "schlagende Verbindungen" (militaristic student fraternity) left.

But in general, they are not at all as popular as in the US.
The main reason: people go, have fun and get drunk even without a frat. I don't know why US students need a frat for that...

What do you do in a frat? I'm so fricken busy with my Masters and my B.Sc. last year that I could never fathom ever joining a freakin club. And now I have a girlfriend! Oy vei...

I haven't met a single person in a frat here anyways. I'm in science BTW. For those in frats, what program are you?

Pre-med at a top 5 ranked school (well according to US News). I openly concede that there are many frats on my campus that I would never join because they are full douche bags with too much money and desire to rape freshman girls. That said, the genuine experience of having my gorgeous house to hang out at and a core of great guys has greatly improved my college experience. Frats are not for everyone. Yes, pledging isn't that easy (but it is a ton of fun, kinda), but if you think you might be interested atleast participate in rush (open recruitment).

So it's kinda of an organized way of making friends?

What no 4th option: "I'm at University of XYZ - Frats not allowed?"

Never thought too much about being in one if our school had 'em, or I was somewhere else. Probably would have looked into them though.

eh, not really. Why do people join the band, model UN, whatever club? A frat is just a social club, that has its own house, operating budget, and government. Some spend all their money on alcohol and parties, some don't.

Going to an fine arts college in NYC meant I had plenty to do, and plenty of people to hang with without needing Frats.

I wouldn't have minded a few sleazy sororities though...

My wife went to Bryn Mawr College; should the school itself count as one really big sorority? I mean, consider:
  • They've got their own schoolwide Hell Week for the frosh (and, iirc, other newcomers).
  • Their solidarity would make most Marines jealous, extending well beyond graduation.
  • They're gender-exclusive, but are affiliated with a co-ed college not far away.
  • Their fight song is in ancient Greek.
  • They have all kinds of occult traditions.
  • There's a Halloween party every year which by itself knocks it down several places on the Driest Colleges in America list (I'm not making that one up either).
Sounds to me like they have all the qualifications.

As for myself, I thought about joining a fraternity back in college, but they wouldn't let me. Looking back I'd just done it on a whim anyway, and truth be told getting rejected by them is probably among the best things that's ever happened to me.

The frats at my college were a joke... and I wouldn't even consider them.

At larger/nicer universities they have more of an appeal as a great way to network and be social.

Like most things, there are good fraternities and bad ones.

I was in one for a year (Beta Theta Pi, like Phanguye), but I dropped out after realizing it wasn't really my thing. It isn't fun to be the only person in the house who doesn't drink - I can't tell you how many times I drove to the emergency room to help someone who had alcohol poisoning.

i flirted with the idea for a while when i first got to cornell. i was thinking it would be nice to be networked as i didn't have the benefit of being in the freshman dorms. then i realized that frat boys are mostly idiots.

danielle is in delta delta delta (cue SNL reference).

i'd rather go geek than greek.

Yeah... that would be my general impression of collegiate fraternal organizations... some exceptions, but their parties do seem to follow the kappa tappa kegga model...

and the neckless grunting primates that inhabit such places seem to possess the IQ of a bunch of grapes... and how did they get in to college, or was it before the alcohol poisoning?

that being said, I know there are some frats that do good... but this just seems to be the prevailing model... booze and stupidity

True, Professional vs. Social is a HUGE difference... my brother is Phi Mu Alpha (Zeta Sigma Chapter) and I was a 'pledge' for the Gamma Phi chapter until family matters arose and I ended up moving.

Social Frat's are a waste of time.
