There is a new binary release of fink out: 0.6.2,

I wiped out my old /sw directory and then downloaded and installed the binary package.

The install worked apparently -- I got no error messages.

But I can't seem to install any packages because I can't get a list of available packages.

I tried sudo apt-get update and I get the following response:

File not found
Ign file: local/main Release
Err file: stable/main Packages

Err file: stable/crypto Packages

I get a similar error if I try to use dselect or even in fink commander.

Any tips as to what might be the matter.

Thanks,

Jim

There are still a number of binaries not available. You are sure you installed the X11 SDK from Panther Install Disc 3- it does not install by default.

Selfupdate then Update-all. That should get you set.

Yes, I did install the X11 SDK.

I did try the selfupdate option to fink and that did seem to fetch a bunch of sources and do a long build but I figured I would try a clean binary install and go from there.

I am puzzled as to why I can't get a valid list of packages which is what the apt-get update command is supposed to do.

Maybe I have to update fink itself from source?

Following up my own post...

I browsed some of the fink newsgroups and found someone's article describing the same situation I first reported.

A reply to the post said to run:

fink scanpackages

That did the trick for me -- apt-get and dselect now seem to work as expected. I was able to install a binary of xscrabble using dselect and it worked under Panther's x11.

Hope this helps others who might find their binary install of fink 0.6.2 doesn't work as expected.

Thanks for the info: I was having the same problem, but hadn't looked for a solution, yet. It worked here, also...
