Last night I was using my 2.2 Ghz late 2007 Macbook when I noticed that no sound was coming out of the speakers. I thought I had hit mute by accident, but that was not the case. It would not let me adjust the volume. I also noticed that from time to time, a red light would shine out of the audio out port. When I went to the sound control panel in preferences, the only listed option is optical out. All of this happened with nothing connected to any port on the computer, I was using it while sitting in a chair. I guess my Macbook thinks an optical cable is connected when it isn't. I have never used an optical audio cable with this computer, just a regular analog cable when I connect it to my Klipsch Pro-media speakers.

Several restarts have done nothing to help, I'm not sure what to do next. I don't have Applecare, so I'm a bit worried about this. Any suggestions on what to do next would be appreciated.

A pretty common problem with Macs; the audio output port is stuck in optical mode (thus the light and no volume control in OS X). I've heard of some success by poking around with a toothpick.

david,
Have you tried resetting pram? I would start there.
