Seriously, iDisk on OS X is just the worst thing Apple has ever done. It's been horribly slow since I can remember, and I've been a .mac/mobileme subscriber since 2003.
6 years and it's still a slow piece of crap! Get with the program Apple!!

And increase the pathetically small capacity.
Dropbox is a good option for hassle-free file syncing, and they give away 2GB for free (50GB for $100/yr).

iDisk seems to be one of those Apple blind spots where they think that something they have, which was totally inadequate six years ago is somehow magically acceptable today.
Don't expect any movement on this. idisk is, like all of mobile me, superfrigginmegaawesome™

Yah never understood why AirPort Utility didn't just work like normal routers. I think really they should just make it an HTML thing like most routers use, and just build webkit into the app and have it display whatever the router says.

Is there any way to connect to iDisk within an application, similar to how one would with FTP?

Yes, it'll suck for a long time. iDisk is one of those embarrassing apps that you don't want to show potential Switchers. Another fan of DropBox.

I do believe a lot of the slowness is due to the Finder. I use a simple little app called Goliath to access my iDisk. It's ridiculous how much faster it is.

It is entirely due to the Finder - any app that can connect to a WebDAV disk (which is all that iDisk is) can do so faster than the Finder. However, no other apps show you live previews of the files, etc. so there is some cost in terms of "usability" to doing so.
Brass - iDisk hasn't used AFP in almost a decade, I believe (it was certainly a WebDAV service in OS 9 and prior to OS X 10.0, because I used to use Goliath for it then which was originally a Mac OS 9 app).

Hmmm.. the link you gave took me to a download for a classic app. Anything similar to this available for Leopard?

Why Macupdate has the Classic app as its link is beyond me. Try this one instead ....

Oops my bad. Sounds like it's all Finder-related then. Curse the Finder!
