I want to transfer some old home movies from VHS to my Macpro's harddrive in a format that iMovie, iDVD, etc... can recognize. I don't need anything that will let me watch them directly, or a tv tuner, etc.. I just looking for a simple peripheral that can digitize the old tapes. Anybody have experience with this and can suggest a low-cost piece of hardware?

DV camera + VHS deck is what I've used. I already had the camera and the VHS deck. Can't get much cheaper than that

Yeah, a DV Cam is probably your best bet, especially if you already have one. If you don't and don't particularly want to get one, you can get an Analog-DV conversion box. I used to have one made by Dazzle that worked great. Don't know if they're still around or if there are any other options now.

Have you still got the original VHS camera? Or the original camera and the 8mm tapes? Did the camera have video/sound out in some usable plug format?
You'd be better off going from the original format rather than the VHS, like from the original camera to a DV camera, and eventually from DV camera to the Mac.

The movies were shot on 8mm and then transferred to VHS, they are from the late 80's, early 90's and I don't have the originals. I also don't have a DV camera....

Borrow and rent a DV camera. Hook up the VHS deck to the DV camera and record to DV tape, then import it into iMovie on your Mac and burn with iDVD. It's not too hard to do

A lot of digital video (DV) cameras can pass analog signals directly to a computer without recording to DV tape... that's how I grab stuff off my TiVo.

Even better
Another solution might be to go to any of the millions of places that does VHS to DVD conversion and then rip the DVDs to your mac.

But then you're doing lossy compression to lossy compression to lossy compression. It's just bad all around. Best bet is to get an analog to VHS converter, and capture it straight up.
