This is no surprise. The IMC in those chips supports 16 gigs. The only limitation was DDR3 production methods - if dense enough chips could be produced to fit 8 GB on a single SO-DIMM - but such DIMMs arrived even before the latest MBPs.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

$1600 vs $112 is WAY more than a bit more costly.

Yeah, but in line with what 4GB modules cost when they appeared on the market.

Excellent news! This means that when we really need 16 GB (and prices are more civilized) we can do the upgrade.

Sweet so I can max it out to 16 gigs? Awesome! I shall hold off since four gigs feels pretty zippy as it is!
