That milk mod is sexy! Reminds me of storm troopers I always felt that Milk needed a bit more contrast in there. Thanks!

Edit: Wow! 1000 posts in this thread!

And Giano, what about making a variant with white menu backgrounds, but black menu item selections?

haha ok buddy.

The only reason I refered to how long he has been here is that he was sitting there putting me down and doesn't even know who I am. And him and you both act just a tad bit immature. Maybe MacNN should make an age limit for the boards. Or even a crap filter.

One vote for the latter. Age limit would be bad for me (I'm 15).

Anyway, my latest screenie (click for full-size):

  • SS Studio Pro - Modified by me to have the gray menu highlights on the "green" version of the theme
  • Finder icon is from Snow.E, folder icon from Snow.E2 Graphite (I tried to change the trash can icon too, but CandyBar wouldn't do it )
  • Dreamweaver and Fireworks icons from macalicious.net
  • Desktop is a modification of the one that digitaljames made
  • Menubar items taken from another theme to get rid of the white stuff

Well, I should've mentioned that I'm using the Demo version, which might be the cause. However, CandyBar changed every single other icon, so it seems a bit strange to me that it won't change the trash can, even during the demo period...

BTW, when you do a free upgrade (like 10.2.5 to 10.2.6), is it best to restore the default icons first?

Soo.....back on topic....

Hi I'm Ben, what's the name of the white skin you posted above for xmms? I searched for both winamp skins and couldn't find it. It'll go perfectly with Milk.

Thanks.

I just installed xmms and found that at first it used more cpu than iTunes, but once I turned off all of the meters and turned the refresh rate way down, it's better, around 6-9%, which is plenty low for an app on my aging iBook.

I found it on deskmod.com it's called...

Teknision
it comes in three variations.
Blue Green and Grey bars.
Don't hesitate just to PM me in the future =).

It's a winamp skin btw, i dunno if that matters cause i've never used xmms.. I'd assume it couldn't be too hard to port a winamp skin since they are exactly the same thing.

as long as its a winamp 2 skin it automatically works with xmms. you dont need to unzip it, just put it in ~/.xmms/skins.

How much CPU is X11 using?

Actually, that is a very good point. Because running xmms actually means running an X11 server like you mentioned, and also the esound driver (esd). Averages, totally unscientific:

xmms: 8%
esd: 3.5%
Xquartz: 1.9% ( not sure if there's others.)

so...total is around 13.4%.

iTunes is around 14%.

So it's very close. If I don't find another use for X11 I will most likely end up using iTunes just because it's more convienient.

Xquartz uses cpu directly proportional to the rate of screen updates. So by turning the refreshing in xmms to the slowest setting and turning off the meters and such, it went from 16% or so down to 1.9%.

This is all on an iBook 500 with 576 RAM, running 10.2.6. Packages installed by fink.

My two favorite themes now are SS Studio, and Smooth Stripes Glossy

Both could easily be Aqua replacements and still kick ass.

Current setup, Panther, while I contemplate compressing Meteora into a .sit archive and launching it to another galaxy so I don't have to think about it ever again.

Please read my comments here before asking about the theme.

Looking good Carbon. I did the same thing with the widgets. Max's look a hell of a lot better than Apple's.

WindowShadeX for the window shadows, and DeskShade for the menubar.

Yeah, you'd think Apple would just admit that they can't do the widgets nicely and pay Max for his.

IF you want to try it out, you should get four things:
1) Apple X11
2) Apple X11 SDK (small 4 MB file, but needed for fink)
3) Fink (http://fink.sourceforge.net/)
4) Fink COmmander (now comes with fink, so I guess it's three.)
Check the fink readme, but I believe that you need to install them in that order. Once you're done installing, fire up Fink Commander and install some packages.

My biggest tip would be to tell you that in Apple X11, when you add an app to the app menu, you have to use the full path to the program, and not just the command.

Good luck.

My 10.2 Panther wannabe desktop experience.

Took the resources from the actual 10.3 Extras.rsrc file and used them to make this theme using quandarry's theme as a base. Larger version here.

After using it for the better part of the day, I think I'm really starting to like Panther's version of Aqua.
